Public Transport in Zurich: Apps, Tickets & Tips 2026

Last updated: 29 April 2026
One of Europe's most punctual and tourist-friendly transport networks

Zurich's public transport is run by VBZ (city trams and buses) within the ZVV regional fare network, which also covers the S-Bahn (suburban rail), regional buses, lake boats and the airport. Trams come every 6–8 minutes, the airport is 10 minutes from the centre, and almost everything runs to the second. The simplest way to pay: buy via the ZVV app with the Check-in feature — it tracks your trip and charges the cheapest correct fare automatically. Critical tip: zone 110 (Zurich city) counts double for fare calculation, so a journey entirely inside the city is billed as 2 zones.

iOS: ZVV | Android: ZVV

Essential Info

Main Form of Payment ZVV app (Check-in feature) or paper ticket from machine Multiple people Yes — multiple-journey tickets are non-personal; group day passes available Check-in/validate Pre-validated at purchase (machine/app); paper multi-tickets stamp at orange validator Payment methods Cash, debit/credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Twint (at machines and in app) Contactless tap on vehicle? No — buy ticket BEFORE boarding Fine for fare evasion CHF 100 + fare (first offence) Night transport (Fri/Sat) Yes — Nachtnetz (no surcharge since 2020) Real-time info Yes (ZVV app, SBB Mobile, Google Maps) Airport → Centre S-Bahn 10–13 min to Zürich HB, CHF 7,20 (3 zones) Best for 2–3 days + museums ZurichCard 72h: CHF 56 (incl. airport + 17 museums)
CRITICAL INFO FOR ZURICH!

1. Zone 110 counts as 2 zones! A trip entirely within Zurich city is billed as a "1–2 zones" ticket (CHF 4,70 single, CHF 9,40 day). Buying a "1 zone" ticket via the wrong app gets you a CHF 100 fine.

2. Always buy your ticket BEFORE boarding. No tap-and-go on trams or buses. Tickets at every stop machine, in the ZVV app, or at counters. Inspectors check frequently — even on short tram rides.

3. The airport is in zone 121 — not in zone 110. Airport ↔ Zürich HB needs a 3-zone ticket (CHF 7,20), not a city ticket. ZurichCard, NetworkPass and the 3-zone 24h pass all cover it.

4. Most tickets validate at purchase. Only paper multiple-journey tickets must be stamped at the orange box on the platform/inside the vehicle before each trip.

Quick Check before boarding

Which Ticket to Choose?

ROAMMATE ADVICE: For a city trip of 2–3 days the ZurichCard 72h (CHF 56) is the best value — it covers all transport in the city and the airport transfer, plus 17+ museums for free. For a single day with airport arrival/departure: a 3-zone 24h ticket (CHF 14,40). For a day in the city only: 1–2 zones 24h ticket (CHF 9,40). Use the ZVV app Check-in feature if you don't want to think about zones — it always picks the cheapest valid fare at the end of the day.
Ticket Type Price (2026) Validity When to choose?
ZurichCard 72h CHF 56 adult / CHF 37 child 72h — transport (city + region + airport) + 17 museums BEST FOR 2–3 DAYS — pays for itself with 1–2 museum visits

24h ticket — 1–2 zones (Zurich city) CHF 9,40 adult / CHF 6,60 child 24h unlimited inside city zone 1 day in the city only, no airport, no museums

16–24 years Adult fare (NetworkPass for young people available) Optional discounted travelcard for residents
25+ years Adult fare

Tips for Families

  • Day Pass Children (Switzerland-wide) is available at a special low price for children up to the day before their 16th birthday — a smart option if you're combining Zurich with another Swiss city the same day
  • The ZurichCard child rate (CHF 19 / 24h, CHF 37 / 72h) covers the same transport AND museum perks — often the best family option
  • Strollers travel free and have dedicated areas in trams; low-floor entry is standard on the entire VBZ tram fleet
  • Junior Travelcard (free travel for kids accompanied by parent) is only sold to Swiss residents — not available to tourists
Always carry proof of age

Inspectors may ask children aged 12+ to prove they are still under 16. A passport, ID card or photo of one on a phone is enough.

🧮 Cost Estimate for a 3-day Family Trip (2 adults + 2 kids 6–15)

  • Adults (2×): 2 × ZurichCard 72h (CHF 56 each) = CHF 112
  • Children (2×): 2 × ZurichCard 72h (CHF 37 each) = CHF 74
  • Total transport + museums: CHF 186 — covers airport transfer + 17 museums free entry

Zurich Airport (ZRH, also called Kloten) is just 10 km north of the city. The S-Bahn or InterCity train connection from Zürich Flughafen railway station — directly under the airport — to Zürich Hauptbahnhof (HB) is one of the fastest airport transfers in Europe.

Option Time Price Frequency
S-Bahn / IC train 10–13 min to Zürich HB CHF 7,20 (3-zone single) — or covered by ZurichCard / 24h NetworkPass Every few minutes, ~05:00 – 00:30
Tram 10 ~35 min to Zürich HB CHF 7,20 (3 zones) Every 7–15 min
Bus 768/759 + train 30–45 min CHF 7,20 (3 zones) Every 15–30 min
Taxi / Uber 20–30 min (traffic dependent) CHF 50–80 Always available

S-Bahn / IC train (RECOMMENDED)

  • Lines: S2, S16, S24 plus InterCity / InterRegio long-distance trains
  • Time: 10 minutes (IC) or 13 minutes (S-Bahn) to Zürich HB
  • Price: CHF 7,20 (3 zones — adult, 2nd class) — child: CHF 3,60
  • Frequency: Every 5–10 minutes during the day
  • Tip: The platform is directly under the arrivals hall — follow signs for "Bahn / Trains". Buy your ticket at the SBB machine on the platform or via the SBB / ZVV app.

Tram 10 (scenic option)

  • Tram 10 leaves directly from the airport tram stop and runs via Oerlikon to Zürich HB and on to Bahnhofstrasse
  • Slower than the train but you arrive at street level with a city view
  • Same 3-zone fare: CHF 7,20
  • Suitable if your hotel is near a tram stop on the route
Already have a 24h NetworkPass or ZurichCard? The airport trip is included — don't buy a separate ticket. The ZurichCard 24h (CHF 29) already pays for itself with the return airport trip + a single museum entry.

When does normal transport stop?

Trams, buses and the S-Bahn run from approximately 05:00 until 00:30–01:00 daily. After that, the Nachtnetz takes over — but only on the nights from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday.

Transport Last service First service
Trams (VBZ) ~00:30–01:00 ~05:00
Buses (VBZ) ~00:30–01:00 ~05:00
S-Bahn ~00:30–01:00 ~05:00
Night S-Bahn (SN, Fri/Sat only) ~04:30
Night buses (N-routes, Fri/Sat only) ~04:30

How the Nachtnetz works

  • Operating nights: Friday → Saturday and Saturday → Sunday only (NOT other weeknights)
  • Hours: roughly 01:00 until early morning
  • Fare: a regular ZVV ticket for the zones you travel — no separate night surcharge since December 2020
  • Routes: night S-Bahn (SN-prefix) from Zürich HB, plus extensive N-bus network from Bellevue, Central and Zürich HB
Friday or Saturday Night Tip: The Nachtnetz hub is around Bellevue and Zürich HB. Most night buses leave from these two squares. A 24h ticket bought during the day is still valid at 03:00 — useful if you bought one for the airport transfer and stay out late.

Do

  • Use the ZVV app Check-in feature — it auto-calculates the right zone fare and gives you a 10% multi-trip discount over a day
  • Buy your ticket before stepping on the tram or bus — there are no on-board ticket sellers and no contactless tap on the vehicle
  • Board through any door — Zurich has open boarding on all trams and buses
  • Hold on or sit down: trams accelerate quickly and stop firmly
  • Let passengers off first, then board — Swiss queueing is real

Don't

  • Don't buy a "1 zone" ticket for travel inside Zurich city — zone 110 always counts as 2 zones, so you need the 1–2 zones tariff
  • Don't assume the airport is part of the city zone — it is in zone 121 (3-zone fare)
  • Don't eat or drink in trams/buses — silent rule, locals will notice
  • Don't put feet on opposite seats — small fine possible after warning
  • Don't expect contactless tap-on-tram payments — they don't exist here in 2026
Insider tip: The ZVV app's Check-in feature is the closest Switzerland has to "tap and go": activate it on entry, end it on exit, and at the end of the day you are automatically charged the cheapest combination of single tickets and day passes for everywhere you went. No zone math, no fines.

Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5 stars)

Zurich is one of the most accessible cities in Europe. The entire VBZ tram fleet has low-floor entry, S-Bahn stations have lifts, and ZVV staff can be booked to assist with boarding for travellers with reduced mobility.

Trams & buses (VBZ)

  • 100% low-floor fleet: every VBZ tram and bus has step-free entry
  • Wheelchair spaces: at least one per vehicle, marked with the wheelchair icon
  • Audio + visual announcements: every stop in every vehicle
  • Tactile guidance: present at major tram stops

S-Bahn & main station

  • Lifts: at every S-Bahn platform in the Zurich network
  • Boarding ramps: SBB Call Center Handicap (Tel. 0800 007 102) arranges assisted boarding — book 1 hour in advance
  • Companion travel: a holder of a Swiss "Begleiter-Ausweis" (companion card) travels with one helper free; tourists with similar foreign cards (e.g. EU disability card) can usually claim the same right at the counter

Lake boats (ZSG)

  • Larger lake steamers: wheelchair access via ramp at main piers (Bürkliplatz)
  • Smaller boats: limited access — call ahead

🛠️ Assistance & discounts

  • Booking assistance: SBB Call Center Handicap — 0800 007 102 (free)
  • Guide and assistance dogs: travel free on all ZVV vehicles
  • Accessible map: ZVV app shows step-free routes between stops
Accessibility Tip: Zurich Airport, Zürich HB and the entire VBZ tram network are fully step-free. Plan transfers via the ZVV app — it will not suggest routes that include a stop without level access if you tick the wheelchair option.

Lake boats (ZSG)

The Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft (ZSG) operates lake boats from Bürkliplatz pier — included in the ZurichCard and in any 24h NetworkPass.

  • Short round trip ("Kleine Rundfahrt"): ~1,5h, included in NetworkPass / ZurichCard
  • Long round trip: ~4h to Rapperswil and back — needs a wider zone ticket or a supplementary fare
  • Cash, card or ZVV ticket valid for the right zones

Taxis

Zurich taxis are metered and expensive. Tipping is not expected (round up).

  • Flag fall: CHF 6,00–8,00 + ~CHF 3,80–4,30 per km
  • Airport ↔ centre: CHF 50–80 depending on traffic and operator
  • Booking: Taxi 7×7 (Tel. 044 777 77 77) is the largest local fleet

🚗 Ride-hailing

  • Uber: available throughout Zurich, often cheaper than local taxis
  • Bolt: also operates in Zurich
  • Mobility Carsharing: 800+ vehicles at 400 stations across the ZVV area — good for day trips out of town (mobility.ch)

Cycling

Zurich is bike-friendly with dedicated lanes along the lake and the Limmat. The terrain in the centre is mostly flat; the hills behind town (Uetliberg, Zürichberg) are steeper.

  • PubliBike: 1.600+ e-bikes and bikes at 170+ stations in the ZVV area — rides start from CHF 3,00; download the PubliBike app
  • Züri rollt: free city bike loan (deposit + ID required) at HB and other spots — May to October
  • Bicycles are allowed on the S-Bahn outside peak hours; a Day Pass Bike costs CHF 15,00
Transport Tip: A summer afternoon on a ZSG lake boat with a NetworkPass or ZurichCard is one of the best free experiences in the city — bring a sandwich, sit upstairs and watch the Alps roll past.
Roammate Tip
Tip: All-in-one app for shared transport

In Zurich you can use the app umob. With this you book and pay easily for all shared transport (bikes, scooters, cars) from different providers in one handy app. Convenient, because you no longer need separate accounts.

Switzerland has excellent 4G/5G coverage and Zurich is fully covered. Free WiFi is available at Zurich HB, Zürich Airport, most cafés and in many trams. An eSIM is the easiest way to stay connected from the moment you land — note that Switzerland is NOT in the EU, so an EU roaming plan often has heavy surcharges here.

Roammate Tip
Airalo eSIM From $4,50

Best choice for most travellers. Instant activation, excellent coverage on Swisscom in Zurich and across Switzerland. Regional Europe plan covers multi-country trips.
