Vienna has one of Europe's best public transport systems — the U-Bahn (metro), trams, buses and S-Bahn are run by Wiener Linien and cover the entire city efficiently. The system works on an honour basis with no barriers at stations, but plain-clothes inspectors are active and fines are steep. Use the WienMobil app for tickets and planning, or buy from machines at every station.
1. Honour system ≠ no checks! Vienna has NO ticket barriers — you can walk straight onto the U-Bahn. But ~100 plain-clothes inspectors patrol daily, catching ~125,000 fare dodgers per year. The fine is €135 on the spot. Always have a valid ticket.
2. Validate your paper ticket! Bought a paper ticket? You MUST stamp it in the blue validator before boarding. An unstamped ticket = no ticket = €135 fine. Digital tickets in the WienMobil app are automatically valid.
3. No daily cap! Unlike London, there is NO automatic daily cap. Each single ticket costs €3,20. If you plan 4+ rides, buy a 24h pass (€10,20) instead.
4. 48h and 72h tickets discontinued! From 2026, Wiener Linien no longer sells 48h or 72h tickets. Use the Vienna City Card (24h/48h/72h) if you want multi-day travel + discounts, or buy multiple 24h passes.

Vienna's U-Bahn is one of Europe's most accessible metro systems. ALL stations have barrier-free access.
The U-Bahn runs until approximately 00:30 on weeknights. On Friday and Saturday nights (and before public holidays), the entire U-Bahn network runs all night with trains every 15 minutes.
24 NightLine bus routes (prefix "N") operate every night from 00:30 to 05:00, at 30-minute intervals. Most routes radiate from the Schwedenplatz hub near the Danube Canal — this is your main night transfer point.
On Fridays, Saturdays, and before public holidays, the U-Bahn runs continuously — no need for night buses if you're near a U-Bahn line. Trains run every 15 minutes through the night.
