Public Transport in Vienna: Apps, Tickets & Tips 2026

Last updated: 2 March 2026
#9 most visited city in Europe

Vienna has one of Europe's best public transport systems — the U-Bahn (metro), trams, buses and S-Bahn are run by Wiener Linien and cover the entire city efficiently. The system works on an honour basis with no barriers at stations, but plain-clothes inspectors are active and fines are steep. Use the WienMobil app for tickets and planning, or buy from machines at every station.

iOS: WienMobil | Android: WienMobil

Key info at a glance

Main app WienMobil (tickets + planning + shared mobility) Multiple travellers No: Each person needs their own ticket Check-in/validation Validate paper ticket once at blue machine before boarding. Digital tickets: show on phone Offline available Yes (purchased tickets stored in app) Payment methods Cash & card at machines, credit/debit in app, Apple Pay, Google Pay Add to Wallet No (use WienMobil app directly) Fine for not validating €135 on the spot, €145 by payment slip, up to €185 if paid late Night transport after 00:30 Yes — NightLine buses daily + U-Bahn all night Fri/Sat/holidays Exit scan required? No (no barriers — honour system) Ticket activation needed? Yes — stamp paper tickets at blue validator BEFORE boarding Real-time info Yes (WienMobil app + screens at all stations)
Key pitfalls to watch out for

1. Honour system ≠ no checks! Vienna has NO ticket barriers — you can walk straight onto the U-Bahn. But ~100 plain-clothes inspectors patrol daily, catching ~125,000 fare dodgers per year. The fine is €135 on the spot. Always have a valid ticket.

2. Validate your paper ticket! Bought a paper ticket? You MUST stamp it in the blue validator before boarding. An unstamped ticket = no ticket = €135 fine. Digital tickets in the WienMobil app are automatically valid.

3. No daily cap! Unlike London, there is NO automatic daily cap. Each single ticket costs €3,20. If you plan 4+ rides, buy a 24h pass (€10,20) instead.

4. 48h and 72h tickets discontinued! From 2026, Wiener Linien no longer sells 48h or 72h tickets. Use the Vienna City Card (24h/48h/72h) if you want multi-day travel + discounts, or buy multiple 24h passes.

ROAMMATE ADVICE: For a 2–3 day trip → Vienna City Card 72h (€37)

How to buy tickets

  • WienMobil app: Buy digital tickets directly in the app. ~5% cheaper for single tickets (€3,00 vs €3,20)
  • Ticket machines: At every U-Bahn station. Accept cash and cards
  • Tabak/Trafik shops: Newsagent kiosks sell tickets too
  • On the bus: You can buy from the driver (cash only, single tickets only, more expensive)

Important changes in 2026

  • 48h and 72h standalone transport tickets have been discontinued
  • New "Youth Annual Pass" for under-26s (replaces semester pass)
  • Annual pass increased from €365 to €467
  • Single ticket increased from €2,40 to €3,20
Single ticket validity: A single ticket is valid for 80 minutes from validation. You can transfer between U-Bahn, tram, and bus — but only in one general direction (no round trips).

Vienna International Airport (VIE)

Option Duration Price Best for...
City Airport Train (CAT) 16 min €14,90 (one-way) Speed and comfort (direct to Wien Mitte)
🚆 S7 S-Bahn 25 min €5,40 Budget-friendly — best value!
Vienna Airport Lines 20 min €8,00 (one-way) Direct to Schwedenplatz/Westbahnhof
Taxi / Bolt 20–30 min €36–€50 Convenience, late arrivals, groups
Best hack: Take the S7 S-Bahn train to Wien Mitte (25 min). The ticket costs €5,40 (two zones: €2,20 airport zone + €3,20 Vienna zone). It stops at Wien Mitte/Landstraße where you can transfer to U3 and U4. A Vienna City Card or 24h pass covers the Vienna zone — you only need to buy the €2,20 airport supplement.

CAT vs S7 — which to choose?

  • CAT: Faster (16 min), more comfortable, check-in possible at Wien Mitte station (for Austrian Airlines). But nearly 3× the price
  • S7: Almost as fast (25 min), same destination (Wien Mitte), but €9 cheaper. Uses regular train carriages with less legroom

Travelling with children

Age Price Ticket needed?
0–5 years FREE No
6–14 years €1,60 (single) / discounted passes Yes
15+ years Adult price Yes
Free travel for children! Children under 15 travel FREE on Sundays, public holidays, and during Austrian school holidays (including summer). This is a massive perk for families visiting during holidays!

Tips for families

  • Vienna City Card: Includes 1 child under 15 (or 1 dog) travelling free per card
  • Dogs: Need a reduced ticket (€1,60), must be muzzled and leashed on all transport
  • Strollers: All U-Bahn stations have elevators. Modern trams are low-floor

The network

  • U-Bahn: 5 lines (U1–U4, U6). Fast and frequent. Runs 05:00–00:30 (24h on Fri/Sat/holidays)
  • Trams: 28 lines covering the inner city and surrounds. Great for sightseeing — tram 1 circles the Ringstraße
  • Buses: Fill gaps where trams and U-Bahn don't reach. All low-floor
  • S-Bahn: Suburban trains connecting Vienna with surrounding areas

Must-know tips

  • Your ticket is valid across ALL modes (U-Bahn + tram + bus + S-Bahn within Vienna)
  • Transfers are free within the 80-minute single ticket validity
  • The U-Bahn is incredibly punctual — trains arrive every 2–5 minutes during the day
  • Tram 1 and tram 2 circle the Ringstraße — great for a cheap "sightseeing tour"

What NOT to do

  • Don't forget to validate your paper ticket at the blue machine
  • Don't assume no barriers = no checks (100 inspectors patrol daily!)
  • Don't ride the S7 to the airport with only a Vienna ticket (you need the extra zone)
  • Don't block the doors — Viennese commuters have zero patience for this

Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5 stars)

U-Bahn accessibility

Vienna's U-Bahn is one of Europe's most accessible metro systems. ALL stations have barrier-free access.

  • Accessible stations: 100% — every station has elevator or ramp access
  • Elevators: Available at all stations. Check real-time status via WienMobil app or call +43 1 7909-100
  • Level boarding: Good alignment between platform and train on U1, U2, U3. Slight adjustments may be needed on older U4/U6 stations
  • Guiding strips: All stations have tactile guiding strips for visually impaired passengers

Trams & Buses

  • Low-floor trams: Modern ULF (Ultra Low Floor) trams are standard on most routes
  • Buses: All buses are low-floor with automatic ramps
  • Ramps: Automatic ramp deployment — press the wheelchair button at the door

Assistance & discounts

  • Free travel: Severely disabled persons (Austrian disability card) + companion travel free
  • Service animals: Guide dogs and assistance dogs travel free
  • Elevator status: Real-time at wienerlinien.at or via WienMobil app
  • Contact: Wiener Linien info +43 1 7909-100
Accessibility tip: Vienna is exceptionally accessible. All pavements have ramps, pedestrian crossings feature audible signals, and most major museums (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Belvedere, Albertina) are fully wheelchair accessible. The inner city is flat and easy to navigate.

Best accessible routes for tourists

  • Stephansplatz → Schönbrunn: U4 direct — all stations accessible, elevator at both ends
  • Ringstraße circuit: Tram 1 or 2 — low-floor, smooth ride past Opera, Parliament, Rathaus
  • Belvedere: Tram D to Schloss Belvedere — level stop, short walk on flat path
  • Prater / Riesenrad: U1 to Praterstern — fully accessible station and grounds

When does regular transport stop?

The U-Bahn runs until approximately 00:30 on weeknights. On Friday and Saturday nights (and before public holidays), the entire U-Bahn network runs all night with trains every 15 minutes.

NightLine buses

24 NightLine bus routes (prefix "N") operate every night from 00:30 to 05:00, at 30-minute intervals. Most routes radiate from the Schwedenplatz hub near the Danube Canal — this is your main night transfer point.

Weekend U-Bahn

On Fridays, Saturdays, and before public holidays, the U-Bahn runs continuously — no need for night buses if you're near a U-Bahn line. Trains run every 15 minutes through the night.

Tips for night travel: Regular tickets are valid on all night services — no surcharge. If you're out on a weeknight, head to Schwedenplatz for NightLine connections. On weekends, just use the U-Bahn as normal. The WienMobil app shows real-time night schedules.

Vienna has a rich shared mobility ecosystem, all accessible through the WienMobil app.

  • WienMobil Rad: 3,000 city bikes across Vienna. First 30 minutes FREE! Perfect for short trips. Available directly in the WienMobil app
  • E-scooters: Lime, Tier, KiwiRide and others operate ~2,000+ scooters. From ~€1,00 unlock + €0,25/min. Note: sidewalk parking is banned — use designated zones only
  • Uber / Bolt: Both work well in Vienna. Often cheaper than traditional taxis
Tip: WienMobil = all-in-one

The WienMobil app integrates public transport tickets, WienMobil Rad bikes, car sharing, and taxi booking in one app. No need for multiple apps!
