Public Transport in Vienna: Apps, Tickets & Tips 2026
Last updated: June 2026 #9 most visited city in Europe
Best ticketVienna City Card 72h · €37 Includes 7-day unlimited transport + 72h discounts at 200+ museums & restaurants. Best value for a standard city trip.
How to payBuy in the WienMobil app (€3,00/single), at station machines (€3,20), or Tabak/Trafik kiosks. Cash & card at machines; Apple Pay & Google Pay in app.
Don't get caughtStamp paper tickets at the blue validator BEFORE boarding. No barriers, but ~100 plain-clothes inspectors patrol daily. Fine: €135 on the spot (up to €185 if paid late). 48h/72h standalone tickets discontinued from 2026.
1. Honour system ≠ no checks! Vienna has NO ticket barriers — you can walk straight onto
the U-Bahn. But ~100 plain-clothes inspectors patrol daily, catching ~125,000 fare dodgers per year.
The fine is €135 on the spot. Always have a valid ticket.
2. Validate your paper ticket! Bought a paper ticket? You MUST stamp it in the blue
validator before boarding. An unstamped ticket = no ticket = €135 fine. Digital tickets in the WienMobil
app are automatically valid.
3. No daily cap! Unlike London, there is NO automatic daily cap. Each single ticket
costs €3,20. If you plan 4+ rides, buy a 24h pass (€10,20) instead.
4. 48h and 72h tickets discontinued! From 2026, Wiener Linien no longer sells 48h or
72h tickets. Use the Vienna City Card (24h/48h/72h) if you want multi-day travel + discounts, or buy
multiple 24h passes.

S-Bahn airport disruption: From 7 Sept 2026 to Oct 2027, the S7 does not serve Wien Mitte — it terminates at St Marx. Use CAT replacement bus (Wien Mitte↔Airport, up to 5×/hour), ÖBB long-distance trains via Hauptbahnhof, or Vienna Airport Lines bus. S7 fare (€5,40) still valid for the reduced route.

Using Public Transport in Vienna: tips & don'ts
The network
U-Bahn: 5 lines (U1–U4, U6). Fast and frequent. Runs 05:00–00:30 (24h on
Fri/Sat/holidays)
Trams: 28 lines covering the inner city and surrounds. Great for sightseeing —
tram 1 circles the Ringstraße
Buses: Fill gaps where trams and U-Bahn don't reach. All low-floor
S-Bahn: Suburban trains connecting Vienna with surrounding areas
Must-know tips
Your ticket is valid across ALL modes (U-Bahn + tram + bus + S-Bahn within Vienna)
Transfers are free within the 80-minute single ticket validity
The U-Bahn is incredibly punctual — trains arrive every 2–5 minutes during the day
Tram 1 and tram 2 circle the Ringstraße — great for a cheap "sightseeing tour"
What NOT to do
Don't forget to validate your paper ticket at the blue machine
Don't assume no barriers = no checks (100 inspectors patrol daily!)
Don't ride the S7 to the airport with only a Vienna ticket (you need the extra zone)
Don't block the doors — Viennese commuters have zero patience for this

Vienna City Card: Includes 1 child under 15 (or 1 dog) travelling free per card
Dogs: Need a reduced ticket (€1,60), must be muzzled and leashed on all
transport
Strollers: All U-Bahn stations have elevators. Modern trams are low-floor
Accessibility & Tips for Travellers with Disabilities
Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5 stars)
U-Bahn accessibility
Vienna's U-Bahn is one of Europe's most accessible metro systems. ALL stations have barrier-free
access.
Accessible stations: 100% — every station has elevator or ramp access
Elevators: Available at all stations. Check real-time status via WienMobil app
or call +43 1 7909-100
Level boarding: Good alignment between platform and train on U1, U2, U3. Slight
adjustments may be needed on older U4/U6 stations
Guiding strips: All stations have tactile guiding strips for visually impaired
passengers
Trams & Buses
Low-floor trams: Modern ULF (Ultra Low Floor) trams are standard on most routes
Buses: All buses are low-floor with automatic ramps
Ramps: Automatic ramp deployment — press the wheelchair button at the door
Service animals: Guide dogs and assistance dogs travel free
Elevator status: Real-time at wienerlinien.at or via WienMobil app
Contact: Wiener Linien info +43 1 7909-100
Best accessible routes for tourists
Stephansplatz → Schönbrunn: U4 direct — all stations accessible, elevator at
both ends
Ringstraße circuit: Tram 1 or 2 — low-floor, smooth ride past Opera,
Parliament,
Rathaus
Belvedere: Tram D to Schloss Belvedere — level stop, short walk on flat path
Prater / Riesenrad: U1 to Praterstern — fully accessible station and grounds
Visual Impairment
Tactile guidance: All U-Bahn stations have guiding strips leading to stairs, escalators and lifts; colour coding and tactile aids throughout. Emergency call panels in lifts and stations have Braille, tactile symbols and pyramid lettering — 550 more being upgraded by 2026.
Audio announcements: All vehicles announce the next stop, transfer options and exit side; door-closing signal uses both loud sound and flashing lights. Digital information columns use the two-senses principle and can read information aloud.
waveIn pilot: Wiener Linien is testing hands-free spatial audio indoor navigation (waveIn app) at five major stations — users navigate by following directional sounds, no screen needed.
Night Transport & Late Hours
When does regular transport stop?
The U-Bahn runs until approximately 00:30 on weeknights. On Friday and Saturday nights
(and before public holidays), the entire U-Bahn network runs all night with trains
every 15 minutes.
NightLine buses
24 NightLine bus routes (prefix "N") operate every night from 00:30 to 05:00, at
30-minute intervals. Most routes radiate from the Schwedenplatz hub near the
Danube Canal — this is your main night transfer point.
Weekend U-Bahn
On Fridays, Saturdays, and before public holidays, the U-Bahn runs continuously — no need for night
buses if you're near a U-Bahn line. Trains run every 15 minutes through the night.
Shared Transport & Mobility
Vienna has a rich shared mobility ecosystem, all accessible through the WienMobil app.
WienMobil Rad: 3,000 city bikes across Vienna. First 30 minutes FREE! Perfect
for short trips. Available directly in the WienMobil app
E-scooters: Lime, Tier, KiwiRide and others operate ~2,000+ scooters. From
~€1,00 unlock + €0,25/min. Note: sidewalk parking is banned — use designated zones only
Uber / Bolt: Both work well in Vienna. Often cheaper than traditional taxis
Tip: WienMobil = all-in-one
The WienMobil app integrates public transport tickets, WienMobil Rad bikes, car sharing, and
taxi booking in one app. No need for multiple apps!
Roammate Tip
Tip: All-in-one app for shared transport
In Vienna you can use the app umob. With this you book and pay
easily for all shared transport (bikes, scooters, cars) from different providers in one
handy app. Convenient, because you no longer need separate accounts.
eSIM & Internet in Vienna
Vienna has excellent 4G/5G coverage. An eSIM ensures you have internet access for the WienMobil app
and real-time transport info from the moment you land.

Airalo eSIMFrom $4,50
