Public Transport in Taipei: Apps, Tickets & Tips 2026

Last updated: 2 March 2026
One of Asia's most visitor-friendly metro systems

Taipei has a clean, punctual and affordable metro system (MRT) run by TRTC, backed by one of Asia's most extensive bus networks. The EasyCard (悠遊卡) is the universal travel card. It is a physical card and works on the MRT, buses, YouBike, airport train, and even at 7-Eleven. Critical tip: eating or drinking in the MRT carries a fine of up to NT$7,500. Always tap in and out.

iOS: Taipei Metro App | Android: Taipei Metro App

Essential Info

Main form EasyCard (physical card) Multiple people No (1 person per EasyCard or contactless card) Check-in/validate NFC tap at gate, or single-journey token Payment methods EasyCard, iPass, Mastercard/Visa contactless, single tokens Fine for eating/drinking Up to NT$7,500 — strictly enforced Fine for fare evasion NT$1,500 + fare Night transport after midnight Limited (MRT until ~24:00; night buses on selected routes) Exit scan required? YES — always tap out EasyCard bus transfer bonus 20% discount when transferring between MRT and bus within 1 hour Real-time info Yes (Taipei Metro app, Google Maps, BusTracker Taipei) Airport → Centre Airport MRT Express: NT$160, 35 min to Taipei Main Station
CRITICAL INFO FOR TAIPEI!

1. NO EATING OR DRINKING IN THE MRT — not even water! Fines run up to NT$7,500 and are actively enforced. This rule also covers chewing gum. Keep snacks in your bag until you exit the station.

2. ALWAYS TAP OUT! Taipei's distance-based fares require tapping both in and out. Forgetting to tap out triggers a maximum fare charge and can block your card from future use.

3. Two airports — make sure you know which one! Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) is 35 km from the city and requires the Airport MRT. Songshan Airport (TSA) is within the city and directly connected to the MRT Brown Line. Wrong airport = very expensive taxi.

4. EasyCard bus discount only works with a transfer! The 20% discount applies only when you transfer between the MRT and a bus (or bus to bus) within 1 hour using the same EasyCard. It does NOT apply if you tap in fresh without a prior ride.

5. Use exit numbers, not the map! Large stations like Taipei Main Station have 30+ exits (A1, M3, Y9, Z10…). Looking at the in-station map wastes time and often gets you turned around. Instead: before entering the station, check Google Maps for your specific exit number and go directly to the signs for that letter-number combination on the platform.

Which Ticket to Choose?

ROAMMATE ADVICE: For virtually every trip → get an EasyCard (NT$100 non-refundable card fee, widely available). It gives you the lowest MRT fares, 20% bus transfer discount, and works at 7-Eleven, FamilyMart and YouBike. The Taipei Fun Pass (unlimited rides) is expensive at NT$1.900–2.200 and only worth it if you combine heavy MRT use with the included attractions.
Ticket Type Price (2026) Validity When to choose?
EasyCard NT$100 card fee + top-up value
(non-refundable)
Stored value, no expiry BEST CHOICE! Works everywhere, lowest fares
Single Journey Token NT$20-65 (distance-based) Single MRT trip Occasional use only — no bus/bike discount

Age Limits & Prices

Age / Category Price Card needed?
Under 115 cm (regardless of age) FREE No
Children (115 cm and above, under 12) Half adult fare Yes, Child EasyCard
Students (12-18, local schools) Concessionary fare Yes, Student EasyCard (not for tourists)
Adults NT$20-65 per MRT trip Yes, EasyCard or token
Seniors (65+, Taiwan residents) Half fare or free (resident scheme) Yes, Senior EasyCard

Tips for Families

  • The height rule (115 cm = free) is practical — no need to guess the child's age at the gate
  • Child EasyCard (half fare, for children above 115 cm under 12) available at MRT customer service centres
  • Strollers are allowed on the MRT; every station has lifts. Fold if the carriage is crowded during rush hour
  • Quiet carriages exist during peak hours — families with young children may prefer the middle carriages
Family tip: Taipei is very pram-friendly in the MRT, but street-level pavements in older districts (Wanhua, Datong) can be uneven. Plan MRT-heavy days for longer distances and use taxis for shorter hops in tight neighbourhoods.

🧮 Cost Estimate for a 3-day Family Trip (2 adults + 2 children under 115 cm)

  • Adults (2×): 2 × EasyCard loaded with NT$300 each — typically sufficient for 3 days of city travel
  • Children under 115 cm: FREE — no card needed
  • Total transport budget: approximately NT$500-800 for 2 adults over 3 days

Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) is approximately 35 km west of Taipei. The dedicated Airport MRT, opened in 2017, is by far the best option. If you land at Songshan Airport (TSA), you're already in the city — take the MRT Brown Line directly.

Option Time Price Frequency
Airport MRT (Express) 35 min to Taipei Main Station NT$160 Every 15-30 min
Airport MRT (Commuter) 46+ min to Taipei Main Station NT$150 Every 4-6 min
Bus (various routes) 60-90 min NT$50-140 Every 15-30 min
Taxi / Uber 40-70 min (traffic) NT$1,000-1,300 Always available

Airport MRT Express (RECOMMENDED)

  • Route: Taoyuan Airport T1/T2 → Taipei Main Station (direct, no stops)
  • Time: 35 minutes, seats reserved — purple seat carriages only
  • Price: NT$160 per person one-way
  • Frequency: Every 15-30 minutes, 06:00 - 23:00
  • Pay with: EasyCard, iPass, credit card or purchase ticket at airport MRT station

Airport MRT Commuter (Budget option)

  • Route: Same route but stops at intermediate stations including Banqiao, Xinpu and Sanchong
  • Time: 46+ minutes to Taipei Main Station
  • Price: NT$150 — NT$10 cheaper than Express
  • Frequency: Every 4-6 minutes — much more frequent
  • Best for: Hotels in Banqiao or along the commuter route
Pro tip: The Airport MRT terminates at Taipei Main Station, which is directly connected to the regular MRT network (Red and Green Lines). From there you can reach virtually any hotel without leaving the air-conditioned underground system. Buy your EasyCard inside the airport before boarding — it's valid for both the Airport MRT and the city network.

Bus (Budget Alternative)

  • Multiple operators including Evergreen Bus and Capital Bus
  • Routes reach Taipei Main Station, Zhongxiao Fuxing and other areas
  • Price: NT$50-140 depending on operator and route
  • Best for: Heavy luggage, hotels not near MRT, very tight budget

When does the MRT stop?

Taipei's MRT runs until approximately 24:00 (midnight) on weekdays and around 00:30 on Fridays, Saturdays and evenings before public holidays. There is no 24-hour metro service.

Transport Last service (approx.) First service
MRT (all lines) ~24:00 weekdays / ~00:30 Fri & Sat ~06:00
Airport MRT ~23:00 (last from Taipei Main Station) ~06:00
Regular buses ~23:30 (most routes) ~06:00
Night buses (Owl buses) 00:00 - 05:00 (selected routes)
Taxi / Uber 24/7 24/7
Last Airport MRT is earlier than you think!

The last Airport MRT Express from Taipei Main Station departs around 22:30-23:00. If you have an early morning flight, check the exact schedule in advance. Missing the last train means a taxi costing NT$1,000+ to Taoyuan Airport.

🦉 Night Buses (Owl Buses)

Taipei operates a limited network of night buses (貓頭鷹公車) on selected routes, running from midnight until approximately 05:00. Pay with EasyCard or cash.

Key night bus routes for tourists:

Route Key stops Fare
Owl Bus 1 Taipei Main Station → Zhongxiao Fuxing → Xinyi (101) NT$15-30
Owl Bus 2 Taipei Main Station → Zhongshan → Shilin Night Market area NT$15-30
Owl Bus 3 Ximen → Ximending → Gongguan (student area) NT$15-30
Night Transport Tip: Taipei's nightlife centres on Ximending, Zhongxiao Dunhua and the area around Taipei 101. All are well served by Owl buses after midnight. Taxis are plentiful and affordable — a cross-city ride rarely exceeds NT$300. Download the LINE Taxi or Uber app as backup for late nights.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5 stars)

Taipei's MRT is one of the most accessible in Asia — every station has lifts, tactile paths and priority seating. Buses are modern and largely low-floor. The main challenge is street level in older districts, where pavements can be uneven, narrow or blocked by scooters.

MRT: Highly Accessible

  • Lifts: 100% of MRT stations have at least one lift
  • Tactile guidance paths: Present throughout all stations and platforms
  • Priority seating: Clearly marked in every carriage — priority is strictly observed in Taipei
  • Wheelchair spaces: Available in all trains
  • Level boarding: Minimal gap between platform and carriage
  • Real-time lift status: Shown in the Taipei Metro app

Buses: Mostly Accessible

  • The majority of Taipei city buses are low-floor with automatic ramps
  • Wheelchair spaces available in all low-floor buses
  • Press the accessibility button near the door to signal the driver
  • Older bus models (small number remaining) may not be accessible — check the route info in the app

🛠️ Assistance & Discounts

  • Free travel: People with a disability ID card (local residents) travel free on MRT and city buses
  • Companion ticket: One companion may travel at discounted fare when accompanying a person with disabilities
  • Assistance at MRT: Staff available at every station — use the intercom near the lift
  • Guide dogs: Permitted on all MRT and buses
  • Contact: TRTC accessibility hotline: +886-2-218-12345

Best Accessible Tourist Routes

1. Taipei Main Station → Taipei 101 / Xinyi

MRT Red Line to Taipei 101/World Trade Centre — lift access, flat underground walkways connecting shopping malls

2. Taipei Main Station → Shilin Night Market

MRT Red Line to Jiantan — lifts available; ground-level access to the outdoor market section (indoor market has some steps)

3. Airport → Taipei Main Station

Airport MRT Express — level boarding, lift access at airport and city terminals

4. Taipei Main Station → National Palace Museum

MRT Red Line to Shilin, then Red 30 bus (low-floor) to museum entrance

Accessibility Tip: Stick to the MRT as much as possible — it's the most reliable for wheelchair users. Street-level Taipei can be challenging in older areas due to parked scooters blocking pavements. The underground MRT concourses between stations in the city centre are a great way to travel between major landmarks without dealing with street obstacles.

YouBike (公共自行車) — Must Try!

Taipei's public bike-sharing system is excellent and enormously popular. Over 1,500 docking stations across the city, with bikes available at virtually every MRT station.

  • YouBike 2.0: NT$10 per 30 minutes
  • Payment: EasyCard (tap to unlock), credit card or the YouBike app
  • First 30 minutes: NT$10 — extremely affordable for short trips
  • Tip: Register your EasyCard in the YouBike app to unlock bikes instantly — no need to operate the kiosk
  • Tourists: foreign phone numbers often fail during YouBike 2.0 app registration. Workaround: at the docking station kiosk, select Single Rental and pay directly by credit card — no registration or local number required. Expect to pay NT$10 upfront per ride this way.
  • Bike lanes exist along most major roads and riverside parks — cycling along the Tamsui River is a highlight

Taxis

Taipei taxis are metered, widely available and relatively affordable:

  • Flag fall: NT$85 (includes first 1,25 km)
  • Per metre: NT$5 per 200 metres (or per 60 seconds in traffic)
  • Night surcharge: NT$20 extra between 23:00 and 06:00
  • Typical city trip: NT$100-250
  • Most drivers do not speak English — show your destination on a map or in Chinese characters

Ride-hailing Apps

  • Uber: Available throughout Taipei — English app, no language barrier
  • LINE Taxi: Taiwan's dominant taxi-booking app — often cheaper than Uber and uses licensed taxis
  • 55688 (Taiwan Taxi app): Large taxi fleet, can book by phone or app

🛵 Scooters

Scooters are everywhere in Taipei and a defining part of local life. As a tourist without a local driving licence, rental is generally not available and not recommended in city traffic.

  • WeMo Scooter: Electric scooter sharing available for those with a valid international licence — NT$3,80/min
  • iRent: Car and scooter sharing — requires a local or international licence
Shared Transport Tip: YouBike is genuinely the best way to explore Taipei's flat riverside areas and the Xinyi district. It's faster than waiting for a bus for short distances and NT$10 for 30 minutes makes it one of the cheapest micro-mobility options in Asia. Register your EasyCard in the YouBike 2.0 app before you arrive.

Taiwan has outstanding 4G and 5G coverage across Taipei, including inside the MRT tunnels. Free WiFi is available at all MRT stations, Taoyuan Airport, and most convenience stores. An eSIM ensures you're online from the moment you land, which is especially useful for navigating the YouBike app and Google Maps in Chinese script areas.

Roammate Tip

  • Price: NT$30-80 per day depending on locker size
  • Hours: 06:00-24:00 (MRT operating hours)
  • Note: No advance booking — can be full during peak periods. Cash payment only at some machines.

  • Price: NT$100-150 per bag per day
  • Hours: 07:00-22:00 approximately
