Public Transport in Paris

Last updated: June 2026 · #1 most visited city in Europe

Best ticket Navigo Easy · €2,55/ride for most short trips (+ €2 for the card). Arriving Mon/Tue for the week? The Navigo Semaine (€32,40) wins.
How to pay Tap a Navigo Easy card or the Bonjour RATP app at the purple readers. Paper tickets are gone (since Nov 2025) — there's nothing else to buy at the gate.
Don't get caught No automatic daily cap. Unlike London, Paris never picks the cheapest fare for you — load a day pass yourself if you'll travel a lot. CDG & Orly need a separate €14,00 airport ticket.
Major pitfalls

1. NO automatic daily cap! Unlike London, in Paris you must manually load a day pass (Navigo Jour €12,30) onto your card. The system does NOT automatically calculate the best price. Plan ahead!

2. Ticket t+ does NOT work for Metro → Bus transfer! A Ticket t+ (single ticket) is valid for Metro-Metro transfers within 2 hours, but NOT for transfers from Metro to Bus. For bus transfers you need a separate ticket or a day pass.

3. Old metros: pull handle up! On older metros you have to pull the lever up to open the door. Not all doors open automatically.

4. Airports are in Zone 4/5! CDG and Orly are outside Zone 1. Regular metro tickets are NOT valid there. You need a special "Paris Région–Aéroports" ticket (€14,00 for both CDG and Orly).

Which ticket should you buy?

Roammate advice There's no daily cap, so it depends on how much you travel. Light days (≤4 rides): pay per ride on a Navigo Easy card. Heavy days (5+ rides): load a Navigo Jour day pass (€12,30). A full week from Monday: the Navigo Semaine (€32,40) beats everything.

From CDG / Orly Airport to the centre
Airports are in Zone 4/5 Regular metro fares don't reach CDG or Orly. The RER B and Metro Line 14 require a €14,00 airport ticket — but the CDG bus 9517 runs on a standard €2,55 fare (free with a Navigo pass).

Navigo Easy vs Navigo Semaine

Paris fully stopped paper tickets in November 2025. You travel with a Navigo Easy card (€2,00 one-off) or the Bonjour RATP app.

  • Single ride: €2,55 on your Navigo Easy (no carnet discount since January 2026)
  • Navigo Semaine: weekly pass (Mon–Sun) for €32,40 — ideal if you arrive Monday or Tuesday

Quick check before boarding

  • Navigo Easy card topped up, or app ticket ready? (paper tickets no longer accepted)
  • Making a metro → bus transfer? You need a separate ride
  • Heading to CDG / Orly? You need the €14,00 airport ticket

Accessibility & travellers with disabilities

★★☆☆☆ 2 / 5

Why 2/5? The Paris metro is old — only 9% of stations are accessible (3% if you exclude Line 14). But the bus network is 100% accessible, and Metro Line 14 (including the Orly link) is excellent. Embrace the bus and Paris is very doable.

Metro & train

  • Metro Line 14 — the "golden line": 100% accessible from Saint-Denis Pleyel to Orly Airport (21 stations, incl. Villejuif–Gustave Roussy opened Jan 2025). Modern, lifts at every station.
  • RER A & B: largely accessible, but lifts are sometimes out of order — always check the status.
  • Tram (T1–T13): 100% accessible with level boarding.
  • Real-time status: Bonjour RATP app or ratp.fr.
Non-accessible stations in tourist zones Virtually all of Lines 1, 2, 4 and 6 (except terminus stations) — including Arc de Triomphe (Charles de Gaulle–Étoile), Montmartre (Abbesses/Anvers) and the Marais stations.

Buses: your salvation in Paris

  • 100% accessible — every bus has an electric extendable ramp
  • Procedure: press the blue wheelchair button on the outside; the driver activates the ramp
  • Space: reserved area opposite the middle door

Assistance & support

  • Services: Accès Plus (SNCF/Transilien) & RATP Accessibility
  • Phone: +33 890 640 650 (Accès Plus) or 3424 (RATP info)
  • Website: RATP Accessibilité
  • Reservations: recommended for assistance at RER stations (not needed for bus/tram)

Discounts & free travel

  • Disabled travellers: free travel for wheelchair user + companion is possible, but usually requires a French "Carte Mobilité Inclusion", which is hard for tourists to obtain
  • Advice: buy regular tickets / Navigo Easy to avoid disputes, unless staying long-term

Best accessible routes for tourists

Orly Airport → Centre (Châtelet)

Metro Line 14, direct. 100% accessible, lifts, modern. 25 minutes — the best way into Paris. Avoid RER B if you can take Line 14.

Champs-Élysées → Louvre

Bus 72 or 73 — above ground, beautiful view. Metro Line 1 underneath is not accessible at many stops (George V, Franklin D. Roosevelt).

Montmartre (without climbing)

Montmartrobus (Bus 40) — small electric buses up the narrow streets, dropping you at Place du Tertre. The Funiculaire has a lift but is often crowded.

Tools & apps

  • Bonjour RATP — turn on "Accessible routes"
  • Jaccede — crowd-sourced guide to accessible shops/cafés in Paris
  • Taxi G7 — "Horizon" fleet for wheelchairs: +33 1 47 39 47 39
Paris accessibility win Forget the metro (except Line 14) and use the buses. You see more of the city, they're more reliable for access, and they go everywhere. Citymapper gives the best bus-only routes.

Visual impairment

  • Tactile paving: all metro and RER platforms have warning strips at the edges; the EQUISENS programme adds guiding channels from exits to ticket windows and platforms across all 302 metro and 65 RER stations, with 2,000+ audio beacons triggerable by remote or app.
  • Audio: stop names announced on most lines (older stock on lines 3bis, 7, 8, 10, 12 still being retrofitted). Platform PA uses distinct male/female voices per direction. Audio ticket machines activate by touching the lower-right corner of the screen.
  • Braille: handrail sleeves confirm direction and position at all staircases; a Braille + large-print metro atlas is available via blindness associations.
Night transport (after 00:30)

Noctilien

When the metro stops, the Noctilien night buses take over, departing in large numbers from hubs like Châtelet and Gare de Lyon.

On weekends, the metro runs about an hour later (until roughly 01:30–02:00).

Shared transport: scooters, bikes & taxis
  • Vélib' Métropole: the famous bike-sharing system — very affordable for short rides
  • Lime / Dott / TIER: shared scooters and e-bikes everywhere, but park only in designated spots
  • Taxi G7: the official taxi service, often more reliable than unknown apps at busy times

eSIM & internet in Paris

Paris has an excellent 5G network, but free WiFi in the metro is unreliable. An eSIM is essential for live navigation through the complex metro network.

Paris tip Install your eSIM before you land at CDG or Orly — airport WiFi can be slow, and you'll want to check RER times the moment you arrive.

Luggage lockers & storage

Don't drag your suitcases around. Paris has reliable options to store luggage safely.

Station lockers are often closed Lockers at the major stations (Gare du Nord, Gare de l'Est, Gare de Lyon) are frequently full or shut for security reasons. Don't count on them — commercial storage is far more reliable.

Roammate advice Because Paris station lockers are so unreliable, Bounce is the best choice for almost everyone — 150+ locations near hotels, stations and attractions, insurance up to €10,000, and free cancellation. Don't count on station lockers; they're often closed.
