Public Transport in Paris: Apps, Tickets & Tips 2026

Last updated: 2 March 2026
#1 most visited city in Europe

Paris has an extensive public transport network (Métro, RER trains, buses, trams) managed by RATP and SNCF. The Navigo system is the key to public transport in Paris — a reusable card you can top up with tickets or passes. Note: Paris works differently than London — no automatic capping!

Major pitfalls

1. NO automatic daily cap! Unlike London, in Paris you must manually load a day pass (Navigo Jour €12,30) onto your card. The system does NOT automatically calculate the best price. Plan ahead!

2. Ticket t+ does NOT work for Metro → Bus transfer! A Ticket t+ (single ticket) is valid for Metro-Metro transfers within 2 hours, but NOT for transfers from Metro to Bus. For bus transfers you need a separate ticket or a day pass.

3. Old metros: pull handle up! On older metros you have to pull the lever up to open the door. Not all doors open automatically.

4. Airports are in Zone 4/5! CDG and Orly are outside Zone 1. Regular metro tickets are NOT valid there. You need a special "Paris Région–Aéroports" ticket (€14,00 for both CDG and Orly).

Navigo Easy vs Navigo Semaine

Paris has fully stopped using paper tickets (discontinued November 2025). You need a Navigo Easy card (€2 purchase) or use the app.

Note! Paper tickets ("Ticket t+") are fully discontinued since November 2025. Only the Navigo Easy card or app are accepted.

  • Large families: French families get a discount, but this rarely applies to tourists.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆ (2/5 stars)

Why 2/5? The Paris metro is old and only 9% of stations are accessible (3% if you don't count Line 14). BUT: the bus network is 100% accessible and Metro Line 14 (including Orly Airport connection) is excellent. If you embrace the bus, Paris is doable.

Metro/Train Accessibility

  • Metro Line 14: The "Golden Line". 100% accessible from St-Denis to Orly Airport. Fast, modern, elevators at every station.
  • RER A & B: Largely accessible, but elevators are sometimes out of order. Always check the status.
  • Tram: All tram lines (T1-T13) are 100% accessible with level boarding.
  • Real-time status: Check "Bonjour RATP" app or ratp.fr.

Non-accessible stations in tourist zones:

  • Virtually everything on Line 1, 2, 4, 6 (except terminus stations).
  • Specifically: Arc de Triomphe (Charles de Gaulle-Étoile), Montmartre (Abbesses/Anvers), Marais stations.

Buses: Your salvation in Paris

  • Buses: 100% accessible. All buses have an electric extendable ramp.
  • Procedure: Press the blue button with wheelchair icon on the outside. The driver activates the ramp.
  • Space: Reserved space opposite the middle door.

🤝 Assistance & Support

  • Service name: Accès Plus (SNCF/Transilien) & RATP Accessibility.
  • Telephone: +33 890 640 650 (Accès Plus) or 3424 (RATP info).
  • Website: RATP Accessibilité.
  • Reservations: Recommended for assistance at RER stations (not needed for bus/tram).

Discounts & Free Travel

  • Disabled: Free travel for wheelchair user + companion is possible, but often requires a French "Carte Mobilité Inclusion" which is hard for tourists to get.
  • Advice: Buy regular tickets/Navigo Easy to avoid arguments, unless you are staying for a long time.

Best Accessible Routes for Tourists

Route 1: Orly Airport → Center (Châtelet)

  • Route: Metro Line 14 (Direct).
  • Accessibility: 100% accessible, elevators, wide and modern.
  • Time: 25 minutes.
  • Tip: This is the BEST way to enter Paris. Avoid RER B if you can take Line 14.

Route 2: Champs-Élysées → Louvre

  • Route: Bus 72 or Bus 73.
  • Accessibility: The buses drive this route above ground. Beautiful view.
  • Warning: Metro Line 1 under the Champs-Élysées is NOT accessible in many places (George V, Franklin D. Roosevelt).

Route 3: Montmartre (without climbing)

  • Route: Montmartrobus (Bus 40).
  • Accessibility: Small electric buses that drive up the narrow streets.
  • Tip: The Funiculaire (cable car) also has an elevator, but is often crowded. Bus 40 drops you off at Place du Tertre.

Tools & Apps

  • App: Bonjour RATP (turn on option "Accessible routes").
  • App: Jaccede (Crowd-sourced guide for accessible shops/cafés in Paris).
  • Taxi: Taxi G7 has a "Horizon" fleet for wheelchairs. Call +33 1 47 39 47 39.
Paris Accessibility Win: Forget the metro (except Line 14). Use the buses! You see more of the city, they are more reliable for access, and they go everywhere. Download the Citymapper app for the best bus-only routes.

Noctilien

When the metro stops, the Noctilien night buses take over. They depart in large numbers from hubs like Châtelet and Gare de Lyon.

On weekends, the metro runs an hour later (until ~01:30 or 02:00).

  • Vélib' Métropole: The famous bike-sharing system. Very affordable for short rides.
  • Lime / Dott / TIER: Shared scooters and e-bikes are everywhere, but watch where you park them (only in designated spots!).
  • Taxi G7: The official taxi service, often more reliable than unknown apps during busy times.
Tip: All-in-one app for shared transport

In Paris you can use the app umob. With this you can easily book and pay for all shared transport (bikes, scooters, cars) from different providers in one handy app. Convenient, because you no longer need separate accounts.

Paris has an excellent 5G network, but free WiFi in the metro is often unreliable. An eSIM is essential for live navigation in the complex metro network.

Paris tip: Install your eSIM before you land at CDG or Orly. The WiFi at the airports can be slow, and you want to be able to check RER times immediately.

Don't drag your suitcases! In Paris there are 3 reliable options to store your luggage safely.

IMPORTANT: Station lockers often closed!

The lockers at major Paris stations (Gare du Nord, Gare de l'Est, Gare de Lyon) are often FULL or CLOSED due to security measures. Do NOT count on them being available. Commercial luggage storage services are more reliable.

Roammate Advice: Because station lockers in Paris are so unreliable, Bounce is the best choice for almost everyone. With 150+ locations throughout Paris you will always find a spot near your hotel, station, or attraction. Insurance up to €10,000 and free cancellation provide extra security. Do NOT try to count on station lockers - they are often closed.
