Public Transport in Naples: Apps, Tickets & Tips 2026
Last updated: June 2026 Cheap, chaotic and charming — with one trick that saves you a fine
Best ticketTIC 90-min single · €1,80 Covers all ANM buses, trams, funiculars, Metro Linea 1 AND Linea 2. From 3 rides/day: TIC day pass (€5,40).
How to payBuy a paper TIC ticket at any tabaccaio or metro machine, use the ANM GO app, or tap your contactless bank card (Visa/MC/Apple Pay) on Metro Linea 1 and the three ANM funiculars. Paper ticket still required for buses and Metro Linea 2.
Don't get caughtAlways validate your paper ticket in the yellow machine (obliteratrice) before boarding. Unvalidated ticket = fare evasion. Fine: €52,20 (€26,10 if paid within 5 days).
1. VALIDATE YOUR TICKET! A paper ticket is invalid until you stamp it in the yellow machine (obliteratrice) — at every metro/funicular entrance and on each bus. Inspectors regularly check on Metro Linea 1 and tourist routes. An unvalidated €1,80 ticket becomes a €52,20 fine (€26,10 if paid within 5 days).
2. €1,30 vs €1,80 — buy the TIC! The €1,30 ANM-only ticket does NOT cover Metro Linea 2 (operated by Trenitalia). Buy the €1,80 TIC integrated ticket at any tabaccaio or station — it works on everything for 90 minutes.
3. Tap & Go works on Metro Linea 1 and ANM funiculars — but not everywhere. Contactless bank cards (Visa/Mastercard), Apple Pay, and Google Pay are accepted at Metro Linea 1 and the three ANM funiculars (Centrale, di Chiaia, Montesanto). The fare is €1,80 — same as a TIC ticket. For ANM buses and Metro Linea 2 (Trenitalia), you still need a paper TIC ticket or ANM GO app.
4. Beware of fake taxis at the airport. Use only the official white taxis with the city logo and confirm the predetermined fare (tariffa predeterminata: €21 to Centrale/centro storico, €24 to Molo Beverello/Municipio, €28,50 to Via Partenope) BEFORE departing.
Quick Check before boarding
TIC €1,80 ticket purchased at a tabaccaio, metro vending machine or via ANM GO app
Ticket validated in the yellow machine (obliteratrice) before first ride
ANM GO app downloaded with offline route map
Fixed taxi fare confirmed with driver if taking a taxi from the airport
Friday/Saturday: note extended Linea 1 service until ~01:20

Roammate advice
For a city trip: buy the TIC 90-minute integrated ticket (€1,80) — covers all modes including Metro Linea 2 to Mergellina and Pozzuoli. From 3 rides per day: switch to the TIC day pass (€5,40). Skip the ANM-only ticket; the €0,50 saving isn't worth the risk of getting fined on Linea 2.

Taxi — Fixed Fares
Use ONLY the official white taxis with the Naples city logo. Confirm the tariffa predeterminata (predetermined fare) before boarding — these are official Comune di Napoli rates valid 24/7 and already include luggage, night and holiday surcharges:
Stazione Centrale / Piazza Garibaldi / centro storico: €21,00
Molo Beverello / Porto / Piazza Municipio: €24,00
Via Partenope (Chiaia seafront hotels): €28,50
Pompeii / Caserta: longer fixed fares published at the rank
Always say "Tariffa predeterminata per [destination]" at the start of the ride. The driver cannot refuse and must hand over a printed receipt showing the route and fare. Only highway tolls and minivan supplements are valid extras.
Avoid unofficial taxis
Touts at the arrivals hall offering rides with non-metered cars are common — and overcharge by 2–3×. Always queue at the official rank and ask for the tariffa fissa. Drivers should hand over a printed price card before you board.
Fare system & rules
How to pay
Validate before you board — yellow obliteratrice machines are at every metro entrance and on every bus. No validation = no valid ticket.
Take a funicular for the Vomero hill — Funicolare Centrale from Piazza Augusteo is the most used; one TIC ticket covers it.
Fare rules to know
Don't buy the €1,30 ticket if you'll use Linea 2 — it's NOT valid on the Trenitalia line. You will be fined.
Tap & Go available on Metro Linea 1 and ANM funiculars — contactless bank card/Apple Pay/Google Pay accepted (€1,80 per trip). Still bring a paper TIC for buses and Metro Linea 2.

Tips for Families
Strollers are allowed on Metro Linea 1 (all stations have lifts) and on accessible low-floor buses
Bring the lift map — historic funiculars and Linea 2 stations may have only stairs
The TIC day pass (€5,40) is the cheapest option for a sightseeing day with 3+ rides
Beware of crowds at peak hours on Linea 1 — children and strollers can struggle around Università/Toledo stations
No child discount above age 5
Unlike Rome (free up to 10) and many European cities, Naples does NOT offer free or reduced child fares from age 6 onwards. Plan ticket costs accordingly when travelling with kids 6+.
ACCESSIBILITY & TIPS FOR TRAVELLERS WITH DISABILITIES
Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5 stars)
Naples is a city of contrasts for accessibility. Metro Linea 1 is fully step-free and modern — among the best-designed metro lines in Europe for wheelchair users. Metro Linea 2, however, is an older Trenitalia line where many stations rely on stairs. Historic funiculars and the narrow cobbled streets of the centro storico add further challenges.
Metro Linea 1: Excellent Accessibility
Lifts: Every station has lifts from street to platform
Tactile paving: Guidance strips along platform edges and station routes
Wide fare gates: All stations (notably Toledo, Università, Museo) have wheelchair-accessible gates
Real-time displays: High-contrast text on every platform
Wheelchair spaces: Designated in each train car
Metro Linea 2: Limited Accessibility
Older Trenitalia infrastructure — many stations have only stairs
Mergellina and Piazza Cavour stations have lifts; Piazza Amedeo and others rely on staircases
Check the Trenitalia "Sala Blu" service in advance for assisted boarding (+39 02 32 32 32)
Buses: Mostly Accessible
Modern ANM low-floor buses with ramps cover most urban lines
Older buses on hill routes (around Vomero, Posillipo) may not have ramps
Drivers will typically deploy the ramp on request
Funiculars: Partial Accessibility
Funicolare Centrale (Piazza Augusteo): accessible at the lower terminus only
Funicolare di Chiaia, Montesanto and Mergellina: steep stairs at intermediate stops
Not recommended for wheelchair users on most lines — use Metro Linea 1 (Vanvitelli stop) for the Vomero hill instead
🛠️ Assistance & Discounts
ANM customer service: 800 639 525 (toll-free in Italy)
Trenitalia Sala Blu: 02 32 32 32 — free assistance for boarding/alighting on Linea 2 (book 12h in advance)
Guide dogs: Allowed on all ANM transport and metro
Disability passes: Italian residents only — visitors with EU-issued disability cards may be eligible for reduced fares on regional trains; check Trenitalia in advance
Best Accessible Tourist Routes
1. Centrale → Toledo / Università / Museo (the "Art Stations")
Metro Linea 1 — fully accessible end-to-end, lifts and tactile paving throughout. Toledo station alone is worth the ride.
2. Airport → City
Alibus shuttle — low-floor accessible buses with ramps. Confirm with driver before boarding.
3. Centrale → Piazza Municipio (port)
Metro Linea 1 — direct, lifts at both ends. Municipio station opens onto the cruise terminal area.
4. Vomero hill (panoramic views)
Metro Linea 1 to Vanvitelli — accessible alternative to the funiculars, with lifts at both Vanvitelli and Quattro Giornate stations.
Visual Impairment
Tactile paving: Installed at all Linea 1 stations and on platforms
Audio announcements: Linea 1 trains announce the next station; some older buses do not
Braille: Limited — present on lift buttons at modern stations, less so on Linea 2
Night Transport in Naples (after midnight)
When does the Naples metro stop?
Metro Linea 1 closes around 22:30 from Piscinola / 23:00 from Centro Direzionale Mon-Thu and Sun. On Friday and Saturday the service is extended until approximately 01:20–01:32. Metro Linea 2 (Trenitalia) closes around 23:00. Most funiculars end at ~22:00, but Funicolare Centrale runs later: until ~00:30 on Wed/Thu/Sun and ~02:00 on Fri/Sat.

Night Bus Lines (Linee Notturne)
ANM runs seven night bus lines (N1–N7) covering the main corridors from midnight until dawn. The two most useful for tourists:
Line
Route
Frequency
N1
East-west axis: Piazza Garibaldi ↔ centre ↔ Fuorigrotta
Every 25 min
N3
North-south axis: Piazza Vanvitelli ↔ Piazza Trieste e Trento ↔ port
Every 25 min
Shared Transport: Taxis, Ferries & Bikes
Ferries (Molo Beverello & Calata Porta di Massa)
Naples is the gateway to the Bay islands. Ferries depart from Molo Beverello (fast hydrofoils) and Calata Porta di Massa (car ferries) — both walkable from Piazza Municipio (Metro Linea 1).
Buy tickets at the dock kiosks or online via the operator's website. Reservations recommended in summer.
Taxis
Naples taxis are metered, but many tourist trips have fixed fares (tariffe fisse) published by the city. Always use official white cabs with the city logo.
Fixed fares published: Airport ↔ Centrale €21, Airport ↔ Beverello/Municipio €24, Airport ↔ Via Partenope €28,50, Centrale ↔ Pompeii published list
Luggage: €0,50 per piece (metered rides only — predetermined fares include luggage)
Booking: Radio Taxi Napoli (+39 081 88 88) or the IT Taxi app (works with most Naples co-ops)
🚗 Ride-hailing
Uber Taxi: Available in Naples — connects you to licensed white taxis (NOT Uber X / private cars, which are illegal in Italy)
FreeNow (mytaxi): Common app for booking white taxis with upfront fare estimates
IT Taxi: Native Italian app, supports tariff lookups
Cycling & E-scooters
Cycling in central Naples is challenging — heavy traffic, narrow streets, and steep hills make it impractical for most tourists. E-scooters are more common as a short-distance option.
Bird, Lime, Dott: E-scooter sharing across the urban area — typically €1 unlock + €0,20-0,25/min
Cycling paths: Limited; the Lungomare seafront (Caracciolo) is the most pleasant option for a leisure ride
Helmets not legally required for adults, but strongly recommended
Roammate Tip
Tip: All-in-one app for shared transport
In Naples you can use the app umob. With this you book and pay easily for all shared transport (bikes, scooters, cars) from different providers in one handy app. Convenient, because you no longer need separate accounts.
eSIM & Internet in Naples
Naples has reliable 4G/5G coverage in the city centre and on the metro, though tunnels and the Spaccanapoli backstreets can dip. WiFi is patchy in cafés. An eSIM is the easiest way to stay connected from arrival.
Roammate Tip
Airalo eSIMFrom €4,50
Best choice for most travellers. Instant activation, strong coverage across Italy and the Bay of Naples islands. EU plan also covers ferry trips to Capri/Ischia.
Don't drag suitcases up the cobbled lanes of the centro storico. Naples Centrale has KiPoint left luggage, and on-demand services cover the main tourist areas.
Most Locations
Bounce Luggage StorageTypically €5,00/day
Store your bags in vetted local shops and hotels. Good coverage around Centrale, Piazza Dante, Toledo and Beverello port.
