Public Transport in Munich: Apps, Tickets & Tips 2026

Last updated: 28 April 2026
One of Germany's most punctual and accessible public transport networks

Munich's public transport is run by the MVV (Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund) — a regional fare association that covers the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus across Munich and surrounding districts. The city itself is operated by MVG (Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft), while the S-Bahn is operated by Deutsche Bahn. Critical tip: Munich runs an honour system — no ticket gates anywhere. Always validate your single ticket at a blue stamp machine before boarding, or buy via the MVGO app where tickets are pre-validated.

iOS: MVGO | Android: MVGO

Essential Info

Main Form of Payment MVGO app ticket or paper ticket (validated) Multiple people Yes (Gruppen-Tageskarte covers up to 5 adults) Check-in/validate Paper tickets MUST be stamped at blue machines before boarding — app tickets are pre-validated Payment methods MVGO app (card / Apple Pay / Google Pay), vending machines (cash / card), DB Navigator app Fine for fare evasion €60 (Erhöhtes Beförderungsentgelt) Night transport after 01:00 Yes (NachtTram, NachtBus + 24h U-Bahn on Fri/Sat) Contactless at gate? No — no gates and no tap-to-pay system; buy ticket first Zones Zone M (city) + zones 1-6 outwards. Munich proper = zone M. Airport = M+5 Real-time info Yes (MVGO, MVV-App, DB Navigator, Google Maps) Airport → Centre S-Bahn S1/S8: €13,80, ~40 min to Hauptbahnhof
CRITICAL INFO FOR MUNICH!

1. ALWAYS VALIDATE YOUR PAPER TICKET! Munich has no ticket gates. Insert single tickets and Tageskarten into the small blue stamp machines (Entwerter) at the entrance to U-Bahn/S-Bahn platforms BEFORE boarding. An unstamped ticket = invalid ticket = €60 fine.

2. App tickets in MVGO are pre-validated. If you buy through MVGO, you don't need to stamp anything — just show the QR code if asked. Buy your ticket BEFORE boarding (purchase must be completed before the train doors open).

3. Streifenkarten no longer exist. The classic paper strip ticket was discontinued in 2024. If a guidebook tells you to buy one, it's outdated — use the MVGO app or buy single tickets instead.

4. The airport ticket needs zones M-5. A normal Tageskarte (zone M) is NOT valid to or from the airport. Use the M-5 single (€13,80) or M-5 day ticket (€17,30 single / €31,90 group) instead — or activate your Deutschlandticket if you have one.

5. Plain-clothes ticket inspectors are frequent. They board mid-trip and identify themselves with a badge. Always have your ticket ready (or your phone unlocked with the QR code).

Which Ticket to Choose?

ROAMMATE ADVICE: For 1-2 day trips → Tageskarte München (€9,90 single, or €19,30 group up to 5 adults — the group ticket is hands-down the best deal in Munich). For 4+ days → IsarCard Woche (€22,30/week zone M). Only consider the Deutschlandticket (€58,00/month) if you'll travel by regional train to Salzburg, Nuremberg or another German city during your stay.
Ticket Type Price (2026) Validity When to choose?
Gruppen-Tageskarte (zone M) €19,30 1 day, up to 5 adults BEST CHOICE for couples/families!

IsarCard Woche (zone M) €22,30 7 days unlimited Stays of 4+ days

Age Limits & Prices

Age Price Ticket
0-5 years FREE No ticket needed
6-14 years €1,90 single / €3,80 day Kinder-Einzelfahrkarte / Kinder-Tageskarte
15+ years Full adult fare Regular adult tickets

Tips for Families

  • The Gruppen-Tageskarte München (€19,30) covers up to 5 adults OR 2 adults + up to 4 children — the most common family ticket
  • Children under 6 always travel free, no ticket required
  • Strollers ride free; lifts are available at virtually all U-Bahn stations
  • The U-Bahn is heated in winter — useful when sightseeing with kids in December/January
  • Most trams have a designated stroller/wheelchair area near the middle doors
Counts as 1 adult or 2 children

The Gruppen-Tageskarte allows any combination up to a maximum of 5 adults. Two children aged 6-14 count as 1 adult — so a family of 2 adults + 3 kids fits comfortably under the group ticket.

🧮 Cost Estimate for a 3-day Family Trip (2 adults + 2 kids)

  • 3× Gruppen-Tageskarte München: 3 × €19,30 = €57,90
  • OR: 2× IsarCard Woche (adults): 2 × €22,30 = €44,60 + 2× Kinder-Wochenkarte (~€7,30 each) = €59,20
  • Recommendation: Group day ticket is simplest and roughly the same price for a 3-day stay

Munich Airport (Franz Josef Strauß, MUC) is located approximately 28 km northeast of the city centre. The S-Bahn is the cheapest and most popular option, but the Lufthansa Express Bus is faster if your hotel is near Hauptbahnhof. There is no metro/U-Bahn connection to the airport.

Option Time Price Frequency
S-Bahn S1 / S8 40-45 min to Hauptbahnhof €13,80 single / €17,30 day pass Every 10 min
Lufthansa Express Bus ~45 min to Hauptbahnhof €13,00 single / €20,50 return Every 15-20 min
Taxi 40-60 min €70-95 Always available
Deutschlandticket holders 40-45 min Included in €58,00/month Every 10 min (S-Bahn)

S-Bahn S1 vs S8 — which to take?

  • S8: airport → Ostbahnhof → Hauptbahnhof → Marienplatz → Pasing. Faster route via the city's east side, runs through the central tunnel
  • S1: airport → Moosach → Hauptbahnhof. Slightly slower but useful if you're staying in the north or west
  • Both leave from the same airport platform — take whichever comes first
  • Important: Buy the M-5 zone ticket — a regular Tageskarte is NOT valid for the airport
Group tip: If you arrive with 3+ people, the M-5 Gruppen-Tageskarte (€31,90) covers all of you from the airport AND gives you unlimited rides for the rest of the day inside zone M. Buy in MVGO before you reach the train.

Lufthansa Express Bus

  • Route: Airport → Munich Nord (some routes) → Schwabing → Hauptbahnhof
  • Price: €13,00 one-way, €20,50 return
  • Frequency: every 15-20 min, ~05:15 - 22:30
  • Suitable for: Travellers with heavy luggage or staying near Hauptbahnhof
  • Note: NOT covered by MVV tickets or Deutschlandticket — separate ticket required

When does the U-Bahn stop?

On weeknights, the last U-Bahn departs Marienplatz around 01:00-01:30 depending on the line. On Friday and Saturday nights — and the night before public holidays — the U-Bahn runs all night with reduced frequency (every 15-30 min). After hours, the NachtTram and NachtBus network covers most of the city.

Transport Last service (Mon-Thu) Fri/Sat nights
U-Bahn ~01:00-01:30 Runs all night (reduced)
S-Bahn ~01:30 (last departures vary) Hourly through the night on most lines
Tram (regular) ~01:00 ~02:00
NachtTram (N16, N17, N19, N20, N27) 01:00 - 04:30 every 30 min 01:00 - 04:30 every 15-30 min
NachtBus (N40-N81) 01:00 - 05:00 every 30 min 01:00 - 05:00 every 30 min
Lufthansa Express Bus ~22:30 last departure ~22:30 last departure

NachtTram — the easy way home

Five NachtTram lines cover the city from 01:00 to ~04:30. They all pass through Karlsplatz (Stachus) in the city centre, so this is your central interchange. Same MVV ticket valid — your day ticket from earlier in the evening still counts.

Useful night lines for tourists:

Line Route Useful for
N16 Romanplatz → Stachus → Effnerplatz East and west connections via centre
N19 Pasing → Stachus → St. Veit-Straße Hauptbahnhof area
N27 Sendlinger Tor → Stachus → Petuelring Schwabing nightlife area
Night Transport Tip: If you're partying in Glockenbachviertel or Schwabing on a weekday, plan to be at a U-Bahn station before 01:00. On weekends the U-Bahn runs 24/7, so no rush. FREE NOW and Uber both work after the U-Bahn closes — expect €15-25 for a city-centre ride.

Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5 stars)

Munich's public transport is one of the most accessible in Europe. Virtually every U-Bahn station has a lift, all trams since the early 2000s are low-floor, and modern buses are wheelchair accessible with ramps. The S-Bahn provides level boarding at most stations.

U-Bahn: Excellent

  • Lifts: 99% of U-Bahn stations have at least one lift
  • Tactile paths: Present on all platforms; high-contrast edge markings
  • Audio announcements: All trains announce next stop and transfer info
  • Step-free boarding: All modern carriages have wide doors level with the platform
  • Real-time lift status: Check MVGO before travelling — lift outages are announced in the app

S-Bahn: Mostly Accessible

  • Most central stations (Hauptbahnhof, Marienplatz, Ostbahnhof, Stachus) are fully step-free
  • Modern S-Bahn trains have low-floor sections marked with a wheelchair symbol
  • Some older outer stations require ramps from staff — call DB Mobility Service in advance for assistance

Trams: Fully Accessible

  • All Munich trams are 100% low-floor — flat boarding from the platform
  • Designated wheelchair/stroller area near the centre door
  • Audio + visual stop announcements

Buses: Fully Accessible

  • All MVG buses are low-floor with kneeling function and a manual ramp
  • Driver will deploy the ramp on request — wave to be sure they see you
  • One designated wheelchair space per bus, with safety belts

🛠️ Assistance & Discounts

  • Schwerbehindertenausweis (German disability ID): free travel on all MVV transport when accompanied by a registered companion
  • EU disability cards: not automatically recognised — bring proof from your home country and ask MVG service centre for guidance
  • DB Mobility Service Centre: arrange S-Bahn or DB train assistance up to 24h in advance: +49 30 65 21 28 88 (free from German landlines)
  • Guide dogs: travel free on all MVV services

Best Accessible Tourist Routes

1. Hauptbahnhof → Marienplatz

S-Bahn (any line) or U4/U5 — both fully step-free, level boarding

2. Marienplatz → Englischer Garten / Schwabing

U3 or U6 to Universität or Münchner Freiheit — fully accessible with lifts at both ends

3. Hauptbahnhof → Olympiapark / BMW Welt

U3 to Olympiazentrum — direct, fully accessible

4. Marienplatz → Nymphenburg Palace

Tram 17 from Hauptbahnhof — low-floor, level boarding at every stop

Accessibility Tip: The MVGO app shows lift outages in real time. If a lift is broken, the app suggests an alternative route automatically. Munich is also one of the few European cities where every tram is wheelchair-accessible — combine tram + U-Bahn freely.

MVG Rad — the city's bike-share

Munich has over 4.500 MVG Rad bikes at 350+ stations across the city. The system is integrated with the MVGO app — same login, same payment method.

  • Price: €0,10/min, capped at €15,00/day for occasional users
  • Subscription: 30-day pass €5,00/month (first 30 min/ride free)
  • Drop-off: at any official MVG Rad station within the city zone
  • Bike paths in Munich are excellent — riding is genuinely faster than the U-Bahn for short distances

Taxis

Munich taxis are metered, cream-coloured, and plentiful. They are one of the more expensive options but reliable.

  • Flag fall: €5,00 base + €2,30/km (city) / €1,80/km (longer distances)
  • Booking surcharge: €1,20 for phone-booked rides
  • City centre to airport: approximately €70-95 (35-50 min)
  • Taxis line up at Hauptbahnhof, Marienplatz, and most U-Bahn terminals

🚗 Ride-hailing

  • FREE NOW (formerly mytaxi): the dominant taxi-booking app — same metered fare as a street taxi
  • Uber: works in Munich with licensed taxi partners; pricing similar to FREE NOW
  • Bolt: launched in Munich in 2024, often slightly cheaper than the others

E-scooters

  • TIER, Lime, Voi: all three operate in Munich. Unlock fee €1,00 + €0,20-0,25/min
  • No-ride zones: Marienplatz pedestrian area + the Englischer Garten — scooters will slow to walking pace or stop completely
  • Helmet: not legally required for adults but recommended
Transport Tip: Munich is one of the most cycle-friendly cities in Germany. Combine an MVG Rad bike with U-Bahn for longer distances — the city's flat geography and well-marked bike lanes make this faster (and cheaper) than continuous public transport for short hops.
Roammate Tip
Tip: All-in-one app for shared transport

In Munich you can use the app umob. With this you book and pay easily for all shared transport (bikes, scooters, cars) from different providers in one handy app. Convenient, because you no longer need separate accounts.

Munich has excellent 5G coverage from all three German carriers (Telekom, Vodafone, O2). Free WiFi is available in most U-Bahn stations, all MVG buses, and many cafés. An eSIM is the easiest way to stay connected from the moment you land.

Roammate Tip

Hauptbahnhof DB Lockers

Self-service Schließfächer (lockers) are available 24/7 inside Munich Hauptbahnhof. Look for the signs to the locker hall on the lower concourse.

  • Price: €5,00-7,00 per 24h depending on size (small / medium / large)
  • Note: Often full during Oktoberfest — book Bounce or Stasher in advance for late September / early October
Roammate Advice: If you arrive in Munich on the day of an Oktoberfest visit, use Bounce or Stasher rather than Hauptbahnhof lockers — the station fills up fast and the queues for the locker hall can take 30+ minutes during peak hours.
