Public Transport in Milan: Apps, Tickets & Tips 2026
Last updated: June 2026 4 Metro lines, historic trams and 3 airports
Best ticketContactless bank card · €2,20/tap Tap at the Metro turnstile — no app needed, same price as a single ticket. For 3-day trips with 4+ trips/day, the 72-hour pass (€15,50) is better value.
How to payTap your contactless Visa/Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay at Metro gates. Alternatively use the ATM Milano app or a RicaricaMi rechargeable card. No exit tap required — flat fare within the city.
Don't get caughtValidate your ticket or tap before boarding — paper tickets must be stamped at the yellow machine. Fine from €35 on the spot (rising to €150 if unpaid). Plain-clothes inspectors operate on all lines, including late-night trams.
1. ALWAYS validate your ticket before boarding! Paper tickets must be stamped at the
yellow machine on the platform or at the bus/tram stop BEFORE boarding. Contactless bank card or
ATM app users: tap the reader when you enter. An unvalidated ticket = fare evasion. Fine from
€35 on the spot, rising to €150 if unpaid. Plain-clothes inspectors operate on all
lines, including late-night trams.
2. Single ticket valid 90 minutes: one Metro entry + unlimited bus/tram. You CAN
transfer from Metro to bus or tram within 90 minutes using the same ticket. But once you exit the
Metro turnstiles, you cannot re-enter without a new ticket — even within the 90-minute window.
3. No automatic daily cap. Unlike London, Milan will not cap your fare. If you take
4+ trips per day, the 24-hour pass (€7,60) saves money. For 3-day trips: the 72-hour pass (€15,50)
beats individual tickets if you make 4+ trips/day.
4. Three airports — very different distances. Linate (M4, €2,20, ~12 min to Duomo)
is fast and cheap. Malpensa (Malpensa Express, €15,00, ~52 min) is further. Bergamo/Orio al Serio
requires an Autostradale bus (~75 min, €10,00) — no Metro connection.
Quick Check before boarding
Contactless bank card ready, or ATM Milano app installed with a ticket — OR paper ticket stamped
For trams/buses with a paper ticket: validate at the yellow machine at stop or on board
Arriving at Linate? Take Metro M4 (blue line) — direct, €2,20, ~12 min to Duomo
Arriving at Malpensa? Take Malpensa Express from Cadorna or Central Station — €15,00, ~52 min
Check last Metro times before an evening out — M1–M4 stop around 00:30–02:00

Roammate advice
For most tourists, tap your contactless bank card at the Metro turnstile — instant, no app needed, same price as a ticket. For 3+ days of heavy sightseeing, the 72-hour pass (€15,50) pays off if you make 4+ trips per day. If you're visiting only for a day, a carnet of 10 tickets (€19,50) gives flexibility without committing to time-based passes.

From Milan Airports to the City Centre
Milan is served by three airports: Linate (LIN) — closest, now directly on the
Metro M4; Malpensa (MXP) — the main international hub, 50 km northwest; and
Orio al Serio/Bergamo (BGY) — popular with low-cost carriers, ~50 km northeast.
Choose the right airport connection before you arrive.

Fare system & rules
How to pay
Tap contactless at Metro turnstiles — Visa/Mastercard/Apple Pay/Google Pay
all work at all four Metro lines. Simplest method for tourists
One ticket = 90 minutes on all ATM services — you can transfer between bus,
tram and Metro within this window (single Metro entry only)
Use the ATM Milano app to buy tickets and check real-time departures for
trams and buses
M4 to Linate — a direct metro ride for €2,20, ~12 min to Duomo
Fare rules to know

and buses — plain-clothes inspectors issue fines from €35
Malpensa Express is a separate Trenord system — ATM city tickets do not
cover it; buy a dedicated Malpensa Express ticket
M4 (blue) and M3 (yellow) are different lines near Centrale FS — M4 serves
Linate; M3 goes south to Rogoredo

Tips for Families
Children under 10 travel free on all ATM Metro, buses and trams — no
ticket or card required
Strollers are allowed on Metro — use the lifts (available at most stations, though older
M1/M2/M3 stations may have only escalators)
The new M4 (blue line) is fully accessible and has wide doors — ideal
for strollers going to/from Linate Airport
For day trips, a 24h family pass isn't available — each adult buys their
own pass; children under 10 travel free
Trams: Historic trams have high steps — not suitable for strollers. Modern low-floor trams
on some routes are stroller-friendly
🧮 Cost Estimate for a 3-day Family Trip
Adults (2×): 2 × 72h pass = 2 × €15,50 = €31,00
Children under 10: FREE
Airport Linate (M4): just a regular €2,20 ticket each way per adult
Airport Malpensa: €15,00 each way per adult (Malpensa Express)
Accessibility & Tips for Travellers with Disabilities
★★★☆☆ 3 / 5
Milan's accessibility is improving but uneven. The brand-new M4 line is fully accessible, while
parts of the older M1, M2 and M3 lines have gaps in lift coverage. Trams vary significantly —
the historic rolling stock has high steps, while newer low-floor trams are accessible.
🔵 Metro M4 (blue) and 🟣 M5 (lilac): Fully Accessible
Lifts at every station, wide doors, level boarding on both lines
Wheelchair spaces in every carriage
Audio and visual announcements
M4: best accessible option for airport (Linate) to centre journeys
M5: serves the northwest of the city (Garibaldi, Monumentale area)
🔴🟢🟡 Metro M1, M2, M3: Partially Accessible
Lifts available at major interchanges (Centrale FS, Duomo, Cadorna, Loreto)
Many older stations have only stairs or escalators — check ATM accessibility map before
travelling
Wheelchair spaces present in trains, but platform-to-train gaps exist at some stations
ATM passenger assistance: call the ATM infoline (+39 02 4803 4803) — note: verify the current dedicated disability assistance number on atm.it as the page structure has changed
Buses: Good
Most ATM buses are low-floor with ramps — accessible for wheelchairs
Kneeling function available on request — press the accessibility button at the stop
Trams: Mixed
Historic trams (e.g. series 1500, 4900) have high steps — NOT accessible
Modern low-floor trams (Sirio series) are accessible — check ATM app for route vehicle type
Lines 14 and 24 operate mostly with modern low-floor vehicles
Accessibility tip
Plan your route around the M4 (fully accessible) and major M1/M2/M3 interchange stations with confirmed lifts. Use the ATM Milano app to filter for accessible routes. Avoid historic trams entirely if you use a wheelchair or stroller.
Visual Impairment
LOGES tactile system: Installed at all M4 and M5 stations and most M1/M2/M3 stations; yellow tactile edge strips on most platforms. Audio at stations includes train arrival, destination, door-opening side and service alerts. Turnstiles and validators emit distinct sounds for valid/invalid tickets.
Audio on vehicles: All trains and surface vehicles announce next stop, connecting lines and which side doors open. Braille station maps in mezzanines; Braille and raised text on all lift buttons.
ISB platform: Real-time lift/stairlift status across all five metro lines at isb.atm.it — screen-reader accessible, used by ~2,000 passengers daily.
Night Transport in Milan (after midnight)
When does the Metro stop?
Milan's Metro does not run 24 hours. Last trains depart approximately 00:30 on weeknights and
01:30–02:00 on Friday and Saturday nights. After that, ATM night buses take over.

Night tip
Check the last Metro departure from the ATM Milano app before a night out. Milan's nightlife centres around Navigli, Brera and Colonne di San Lorenzo — all covered by Metro M2/M1 until ~00:30 and then NM night buses. Uber is also widely available.
Shared Transport: Taxis, Bikes & Scooters
Taxis
Milan's white taxis are metered and licensed. They're more expensive than in southern Italian cities
but reliable and honest.
Book via: Radio Taxi 02 4040, ItTaxi app, or flag from the street
🚗 Ride-Hailing
Uber: Available in Milan (UberX, Uber Black, Uber Van) — often cheaper
than white taxis for in-city trips
Free Now: Licensed NCC drivers, bookable via app
BikeMi (Bike Sharing)
Milan's official bike sharing service with stations across the city centre.
Daily subscription: €4,50 (unlimited rides up to 30 min free per ride)
Weekly subscription: €9,00
E-bikes available (first 30 min: €0,50; beyond: €0,25 per minute)
Book via BikeMi app or at stations with credit card
Great for flat rides around the centre — Duomo, Castello, Navigli, Brera
E-Scooters
Lime, Bird, Helbiz, Dott: All operate in Milan — scan via app
Typically €1,00 unlock + €0,25–0,30 per minute
Must be parked in designated areas — random parking leads to fines
Milan tip
BikeMi is excellent for flat central Milan — ride from Centrale to the Duomo, along the Navigli canals, or to Parco Sempione. The city centre is compact enough to combine one Metro ride with a BikeMi leg and skip the taxi entirely.
Roammate Tip
Tip: All-in-one app for shared transport
In Milan you can use the app umob. With this you book and pay
easily for all shared transport (bikes, scooters, cars) from different providers in one
handy app. Convenient, because you no longer need separate accounts.
Italy has solid 4G coverage in Milan with increasing 5G availability. Free WiFi is available in
the Metro stations and many cafes. An eSIM ensures you're connected from the moment you land at
Linate or Malpensa.
Roammate Tip
Airalo eSIMFrom $4,50
Best choice for most travellers. Instant activation, strong
4G/5G coverage across Italy. One plan can cover multiple countries if you're also visiting
elsewhere in Europe.
Milan tip
Activate your eSIM before departure. The ATM Milano app works much better with a live data connection — and you'll want it for real-time tram and bus departures. Metro WiFi is available but inconsistent in tunnels.
Luggage Lockers & Storage in Milan
Milan Central Station (Centrale FS) has luggage storage, and there are options near major tourist
areas like the Duomo and Castello Sforzesco.
Most Locations
Bounce Luggage StorageTypically €5,00/day
Store your bags in vetted shops and hotels near Centrale,
Duomo and Navigli. Book in advance for guaranteed availability.
Official luggage storage (Kipoint/Deposito Bagagli) is available at
Milan Central Station near platform 1.
Price: approximately €6,00 for the first 5 hours, €1,00/hour after
Hours: 06:00–23:00 daily
Note: Can have queues in high season — Bounce/Stasher offer advance
booking with no waiting
Roammate Advice
If you're doing a day trip from Milan (e.g. to Lake Como or Bergamo), store your bags at Centrale FS or nearby Bounce location first — it's cheap and keeps you mobile for the day.
