Public Transport in Hong Kong: Apps, Tickets & Tips 2026

Last updated: 2 March 2026
One of the world's most efficient public transport cities

Hong Kong has one of the world's best public transport systems, built around the MTR (Mass Transit Railway). The Octopus Card is the universal payment method. It is a physical rechargeable contactless smart card and works on the MTR, buses, trams, Star Ferry, and even in 7-Eleven. Critical tip: always keep sufficient balance on your Octopus Card; the system allows up to HKD 35 negative, after which your card is blocked.

iOS: MTR Mobile | Android: MTR Mobile

YES — always tap out on MTR Octopus minimum balance HKD 35 (card blocks below -HKD 35) Real-time info Yes (MTR Mobile, Citymapper, Google Maps) Airport → Centre Airport Express: HKD 120, 24 min to Hong Kong Station
CRITICAL INFO FOR HONG KONG!

1. ALWAYS TAP OUT ON THE MTR! The fare is calculated between entry and exit stations. If you don't tap out, the maximum fare is charged automatically and recovering it requires visiting a customer service centre.

2. Octopus Card is essential — but top up in time! The card allows up to HKD 35 negative balance, after which turnstiles block you. Top up at any MTR station, 7-Eleven, Circle K, or via the Octopus app.

3. Airport Express ≠ regular MTR! Your Tourist Day Pass does NOT include the Airport Express. Always buy a separate Airport Express ticket.

4. Three taxi colours — three different zones! Red taxis (urban), green taxis (New Territories), blue taxis (Lantau Island only). A green taxi cannot take you to Hong Kong Island — this leads to awkward situations at the hotel.

Which Ticket to Choose?

ROAMMATE ADVICE: For a city trip of 3+ days → get an Octopus Card (HKD 150 at any MTR station, refundable deposit included). The Tourist Day Pass (HKD 75/day) only becomes worthwhile if you make 5+ MTR rides per day — most tourists don't hit that threshold.

Tips for Families

  • The Child Octopus Card (aged 3-11) automatically charges half the adult fare on all MTR, buses and trams
  • Children under 3 travel free — no card needed
  • The child card also works at 7-Eleven and other stores — handy for buying snacks
  • Strollers are allowed on MTR; use the lifts, which are at every station
Student Octopus for under-26s

The Student Octopus Card applies half fares and requires enrolment at a Hong Kong school or university. As a tourist, you are not eligible. The regular Child Octopus (aged 3-11) is available without conditions.

🧮 Cost Estimate for a 3-day Family Trip

  • Adults (2×): 2 × Octopus (HKD 150 each, deposit refundable)
  • Children 3-11 (2×): 2 × Child Octopus (HKD 70 each)
  • Typical spending per person: HKD 80-150 for transport over 3 days

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is located on Lantau Island, approximately 35 km from the city centre. The Airport Express is by far the best option for most travellers.

Option Time Price Frequency
Airport Express 24 min (HK Station)
21 min (Kowloon Station)
HKD 120 / HKD 105 Every 10 min
Bus A11/A21 60-90 min HKD 33-40 Every 15-30 min

Airport Express (RECOMMENDED)

  • Route: HKIA → Tsing Yi → Kowloon → Hong Kong Station (Central)
  • Time: 24 minutes direct to Hong Kong Station
  • Price: HKD 120 (adult, one-way) — return HKD 215 valid 30 days
  • Frequency: Every 10 minutes, 05:54 - 00:48
  • Note: NOT included in Tourist Day Pass — buy separately
In-town Check-in: With the Airport Express return ticket, you can check in your luggage and receive your boarding pass at Hong Kong Station or Kowloon Station from 1 hour up to 1 day before departure. You then travel to the airport without bags. Available for most airlines — check in advance.

Budget option: Bus A11/A21

  • A11: Airport → North Point (via HK Island north side)
  • A21: Airport → Hung Hom via Kowloon
  • Price: HKD 33-40 (pay with Octopus)
  • Suitable for: Light luggage, no rush, flexible destination

Cheapest option: Bus S1 + MTR

  • Bus S1 from airport to Tung Chung Station (HKD 6,80)
  • Then take Tung Chung MTR line into the city
  • Total: approximately HKD 20-25 to the centre
  • Suitable for: Budget travellers with minimal luggage and extra time

When does the MTR stop?

The MTR runs until approximately 00:00-01:00 depending on the line and direction. The exact last train time varies per station — always check MTR Mobile for real-time info.

Transport Last service First service
MTR ~00:00-01:00 (varies by line) ~06:00
Airport Express 00:48 (from HKIA) 05:54
Regular buses ~24:00 ~06:00
Night buses (N-routes) 00:00 - 06:00
Trams (Ding Ding) ~24:00 ~06:00
Star Ferry ~23:30 ~06:30

Night Buses

Hong Kong has an extensive night bus network (N-prefix routes). Most run from midnight until approximately 06:00. Pay with Octopus Card — same as regular buses.

Useful night buses for tourists:

Line Route Fare
N121 Central → Mong Kok → Sha Tin HKD 8-15
N170 Admiralty → Tsim Sha Tsui → Mong Kok HKD 8
N281 Wan Chai → Causeway Bay → Hung Hom HKD 9
Night Transport Tip: Check the last MTR time in the MTR Mobile app BEFORE going out. Hong Kong nights are lively — especially in Lan Kwai Fong and Wan Chai — and you don't want to miss the last train. After midnight: Octopus works in all night buses. Uber and taxis are available around the clock.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5 stars)

Hong Kong's MTR is highly accessible with lifts at every station. Buses and trams are more mixed: modern buses have low-floor access, while the historic trams (Ding Ding) have steps and are NOT wheelchair accessible.

MTR: Very Accessible

  • Lifts: All MTR stations have at least one lift
  • Tactile guidance paths: Present on all platforms
  • Priority seats: In every carriage, clearly marked
  • Wheelchair spaces: Available in all trains
  • Real-time lift status: Check MTR Mobile app before travelling

Buses: Mixed Picture

  • New low-floor buses: Approx. 70% of fleet — wheelchair accessible with ramp
  • Old double-deckers: Steps only — not accessible
  • Route 42: Entirely low-floor — useful for Central area

Trams (Ding Ding): NOT Accessible

  • Historic double-decker trams have steep steps — not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers
  • Consider the MTR Island Line as an accessible alternative along the same corridor

Star Ferry: Partially Accessible

  • Ramps available at Central and Tsim Sha Tsui piers
  • Deck level may vary with tide — staff will assist
  • Always inform staff when boarding with a wheelchair

🛠️ Assistance & Discounts

  • Assistance at MTR stations: Contact Customer Service at any station
  • Companion travel: One companion travels free on most MTR services
  • Guide dogs: Allowed on all MTR, buses and ferries
  • MTR Disability Concession: Apply at MTR Customer Service Centre

Best Accessible Tourist Routes

1. Central → Tsim Sha Tsui

MTR Tsuen Wan Line to Tsim Sha Tsui — fully accessible, or Star Ferry (tide-dependent)

2. Airport → City

Airport Express — level boarding throughout, lift access at all stations

3. Central → Causeway Bay (shopping)

MTR Island Line — lifts available, no steps

4. Central → Stanley Market

Bus 6 or 6X (low-floor version when available) or taxi — check before boarding

Accessibility Tip: Use the MTR whenever possible — it's the most consistent for accessibility. Avoid the trams entirely if you use a wheelchair. The MTR Mobile app shows lift availability in real time; check before setting off.

Star Ferry & Other Ferries

The Star Ferry between Central/Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui is an iconic Hong Kong experience — and still one of the best value trips in the city.

  • Star Ferry (Central ↔ Tsim Sha Tsui): HKD 4,00 / HKD 5,00 (lower / upper deck, Mon–Fri) — HKD 5,60 / HKD 6,50 (Sat–Sun & public holidays)
  • Star Ferry (Wan Chai ↔ Tsim Sha Tsui): HKD 5,00 (Mon–Fri) / HKD 6,50 (Sat–Sun)
  • Pay with Octopus Card or cash
  • Runs approximately 06:30 - 23:30, every 6-12 minutes

Taxis

Hong Kong taxis are metered, relatively affordable, and plentiful. Know the colour zones:

  • Red taxi: Urban areas (Hong Kong Island + Kowloon) — HKD 27 flag fall + HKD 1,90/200m
  • Green taxi: New Territories only — cannot go to HK Island
  • Blue taxi: Lantau Island only — including airport area
  • Tunnel surcharges: Cross-harbour tunnel adds HKD 15-30 to the fare

🚗 Ride-hailing

  • Uber: Available throughout Hong Kong with licensed vehicles
  • DiDi: Alternative to Uber, often competitive pricing
  • HKTaxi app: Book licensed taxis via app

Cycling

Cycling in urban Hong Kong (Central, Kowloon) is not recommended — extremely hilly and traffic-heavy. Good cycling paths exist in the New Territories, particularly around Shing Mun Valley and Tai Po.

  • Gobee / HelloToby: Bike-sharing in New Territories — HKD 5-10/hour
  • Bikes not permitted on MTR (except folded/bagged and on certain routes)
Transport Tip: The Star Ferry is not just cheap — the harbour crossing at night, with the Hong Kong skyline lit up, is one of the most spectacular sights in the city. Budget HKD 5,00 (Mon–Fri) and don't miss it.

Hong Kong has excellent 5G coverage throughout the city. WiFi is widely available in MTR stations, shopping malls, and McDonald's. An eSIM is the most convenient way to stay connected from the moment you land.

Don't drag your suitcases around the narrow streets of Hong Kong. MTR stations have lockers, and luggage storage services are widely available near tourist areas.

MTR Station Lockers

Self-service lockers are available at larger MTR stations including Hong Kong Station and Kowloon Station.

  • Price: approximately HKD 30-50 per day depending on size
  • Note: No advance booking possible — can be full during peak season
Roammate Advice: For most visitors, Bounce is the safest bet — you can book in advance, locations are near tourist spots, and insurance covers your bags. MTR lockers are convenient but can be full on weekends and public holidays.
