Public Transport in Hamburg: Apps, Tickets & Tips 2026
Last updated: 29 April 2026
Germany's gateway to the sea — with public ferries
included in every transport ticket
Hamburg's public transport is run by the HVV (Hamburger Verkehrsverbund) — a regional
fare association covering U-Bahn, S-Bahn, bus and the city's iconic harbour ferries. Operators include
Hochbahn (U-Bahn + buses), S-Bahn Hamburg (Deutsche Bahn),
VHH (regional buses) and HADAG (port ferries). The harbour ferries are
included in every HVV ticket — making Hamburg the only German city where a normal day pass also gets
you a "harbour cruise" along the Elbe. Critical tip: Hamburg runs an
honour system with no ticket gates. Always validate paper single tickets at a red stamp
machine before boarding, or buy via the hvv switch app where tickets are pre-validated.

CRITICAL INFO FOR HAMBURG!
1. ALWAYS VALIDATE YOUR PAPER SINGLE TICKET! Hamburg has no ticket gates. Insert single
tickets into the small red stamp machines (Entwerter) at the entrance to U-Bahn/S-Bahn platforms BEFORE
boarding. An unstamped single ticket = invalid ticket = €60 fine.
2. App tickets in hvv switch are pre-validated. If you buy through hvv switch, you
don't need to stamp anything — just show the QR code if asked. Buy your ticket BEFORE boarding (purchase
must be completed before the train doors open).
3. The S1 to/from the airport SPLITS at Ohlsdorf. The front half goes to Hamburg Airport
(Flughafen), the rear half goes to Poppenbüttel. When leaving Hamburg, board the FRONT carriages and
check the digital sign. When arriving, the train re-couples at Ohlsdorf — just stay seated.
4. Harbour ferries = part of normal HVV. Use your day ticket on HADAG ferries 61, 62,
64, 72, 73 or 75. Do NOT pay separately for a harbour cruise unless you specifically want a guided
tourist boat — the public ferry covers the same waterfront for the price of a normal ride.
5. Plain-clothes ticket inspectors are frequent. They board mid-trip and identify
themselves with a badge. Always have your ticket ready (or your phone unlocked with the QR code).
Quick Check before boarding
- hvv switch app installed and ticket purchased — OR paper single ticket stamped at the red machine
- Right zone selected (AB for city + airport, wider zones only for day trips outside Greater Hamburg)
- Departure platform checked in DB Navigator or hvv switch (S-Bahn platforms can change)
- Travelling in a group? Buy a Gruppenkarte (€16,40) instead of individual tickets — much cheaper
- QR code easy to access on your phone — no scrambling when the inspector arrives
Which Ticket to Choose?
ROAMMATE ADVICE: For 1-2 day
trips → Tageskarte AB (€8,20 single) or Gruppenkarte AB (€16,40 for up to
5 people — the best deal in Hamburg). For 3-5 days with attractions → Hamburg CARD
(€11,90/day, includes transport + 150 attraction discounts). For 4+ days with no attraction discounts →
9-Uhr-Wochenkarte (€27,40/week). Only consider the Deutschlandticket
(€63,00/month) if you'll travel by regional train to Lübeck, Bremen or another German city during your
stay.

Tips for Families
- The Gruppenkarte AB (€16,40) covers up to 5 people of any age — by far the
cheapest family option for a day in Hamburg
- Children under 6 always travel free, no ticket required
- The Hamburg CARD Group (1 adult + up to 3 children under 15) starts at €18,90
per day and adds attraction discounts on top
- Strollers ride free; lifts are available at the vast majority of U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations
- HADAG harbour ferries are wildly popular with kids — the Line 62 ride from Landungsbrücken to
Finkenwerder feels like a mini-cruise and is included in any day ticket
Gruppenkarte
flexibility
The Gruppenkarte allows ANY combination of up to 5 people (children and adults all count
equally). It does not need to be a single family — friends can buy one together too. Everyone
must stay together throughout the day.
🧮 Cost Estimate for a 3-day Family Trip (2 adults + 2 kids)
- 3× Gruppenkarte AB: 3 × €16,40 = €42,00
- OR: 3× Hamburg CARD Group (with attraction discounts): from 3 × €18,90 = €56,70 (worth it if you
visit 2+ paid attractions per day)
- Recommendation: Gruppenkarte if you mainly want transport; Hamburg CARD Group
if you'll visit Miniatur Wunderland, Elbphilharmonie tour or the Hamburg Dungeon
Hamburg Airport (HAM) is one of the most conveniently connected airports in Germany — only 8 km
north of the city centre. The S-Bahn S1 runs directly to the airport from Hauptbahnhof and the
journey takes just 25 minutes. There is no taxi-only zone or special airport surcharge.

S-Bahn S1 — important splitting
behaviour
- Going TO the airport: trains depart from Hauptbahnhof platform 3/4 every 10 min. The train
SPLITS at Ohlsdorf: front half = Flughafen, rear half = Poppenbüttel. Sit in
the FRONT, and check the digital sign in your carriage
- Coming FROM the airport: just board, the train re-couples at Ohlsdorf and continues to
Hauptbahnhof — no action needed
- The journey is 25 minutes from Hauptbahnhof — faster than a taxi during rush hour
- Important: A single Hamburg AB ticket (€4,10) is valid the whole way — there
is NO airport surcharge in Hamburg, unlike Munich or Frankfurt
Group tip: If
you arrive with 3+ people, buy a Gruppenkarte AB (€16,40) in hvv switch BEFORE
boarding the S1. It covers all of you from the airport AND gives unlimited rides for the rest of
the day inside zones AB. For 5 people that's €2,80 per person all day.
Late-night transfer
- S1 runs roughly 04:00 to 23:00 from the airport
- After hours: NachtBus 606 connects the airport area to the city centre — small
detours, ~40 min
- Taxi is the easiest option for very late arrivals (~€30 to Reeperbahn / St. Pauli)
Hamburg's HADAG harbour ferries are part of the regular HVV public-transport
network. Locals use them as buses across the Elbe; tourists use them as a free-of-extra-cost
"harbour cruise". Any valid HVV ticket — Tageskarte, Gruppenkarte, Deutschlandticket, even a single
AB ride — covers all of them.

cruise: Take Line 62 from Landungsbrücken Pier 3 all the way to
Finkenwerder (~25 min one way). You'll pass Dockland, the container terminals,
Övelgönne beach and historic Neumühlen — for the price of a normal day ticket. Sit on the upper
deck on the right side outbound, left side returning, for the best views.
What is NOT included
- Tourist harbour tours (Hafenrundfahrt): branded boats with commentary —
separate ticket €20-25
- Maritime Circle Line: hop-on-hop-off museum boat — separate ticket
- HADAG Hop-On Hop-Off: tourist version of the public ferries — separate ticket
- Alster boats (the inner-city lake): commercial cruises only, NOT public
transport
When does the U-Bahn stop?
On weeknights, the last U-Bahn departs central stations around 00:30-01:00. On Friday and Saturday
nights — and the night before public holidays — the U-Bahn AND S-Bahn run all night with reduced
frequency (every 20-30 min). After hours on weekdays, the NachtBus network (lines 600-688) covers
the city, all departing from Rathausmarkt.

NachtBus — the easy way home on
weekdays
22 NachtBus lines (600-688) cover the city from approximately 01:00 to 04:00. They all depart from
Rathausmarkt in the city centre, so this is your central interchange. Same HVV
ticket valid — your day ticket from earlier in the evening still counts.

Night Transport
Tip: If you're partying on the Reeperbahn on a weekday, plan to be at a U-Bahn station
before 01:00. On weekends the U-Bahn and S-Bahn run 24/7, so no rush. FREE NOW,
Uber and Bolt all work after the U-Bahn closes — expect €12-20 for a city-centre ride. The unique
Hamburg option is MOIA, an electric ride-pooling service that often beats taxi
pricing late at night.
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5 stars)
Hamburg's public transport is among the most accessible in Germany. The vast majority of U-Bahn and
S-Bahn stations have lifts, all modern buses are low-floor with ramps, and the harbour ferries are
wheelchair accessible. A handful of older U1 stations are still being upgraded, so always check the
hvv switch app for the lift status of your route.
U-Bahn: Mostly Step-free
- Lifts: ~90% of U-Bahn stations have at least one lift; older U1 stations on the
northern branch are the main exceptions
- Tactile paths: Present on all platforms; high-contrast edge markings
- Audio announcements: All trains announce next stop and transfer info
- Step-free boarding: All modern carriages have wide doors level with the
platform
- Real-time lift status: Check hvv switch — outages are flagged in the app and
rerouting is suggested automatically
S-Bahn: Mostly Accessible
- All major stations (Hauptbahnhof, Altona, Dammtor, Jungfernstieg, Landungsbrücken) are fully
step-free
- Modern S-Bahn trains (Class 490) have low-floor sections marked with a wheelchair symbol
- Some older outer stations require a ramp from staff — call DB Mobility Service in advance for
assistance
Buses: Fully Accessible
- All Hochbahn and VHH buses are low-floor with kneeling function and a manual ramp
- Driver will deploy the ramp on request — wave to be sure they see you
- One designated wheelchair space per bus, with safety belts
Harbour Ferries: Accessible
- HADAG ferries are step-free at most piers; Landungsbrücken Pier 1-6 fully wheelchair-accessible
- The line 62 to Finkenwerder boards at level — easy roll-on, roll-off
- Smaller piers (Övelgönne) may have a sloped gangway depending on the tide — staff will assist
🛠️ Assistance & Discounts
- Schwerbehindertenausweis (German disability ID): free travel on all HVV
transport when accompanied by a registered companion
- EU disability cards: not automatically recognised — bring proof from your home
country and ask the HVV service centre for guidance
- DB Mobility Service Centre: arrange S-Bahn or DB train assistance up to 24h in
advance: +49 30 65 21 28 88 (free from German landlines)
- Guide dogs: travel free on all HVV services
Best Accessible Tourist Routes
1. Hauptbahnhof → Jungfernstieg / Rathausmarkt
S1/S2/S3/S21/S31 or U1/U2/U3 — both fully step-free, level boarding
2. Hauptbahnhof → Landungsbrücken (harbour)
S1/S3/S31 direct — Landungsbrücken station has lifts to all piers
3. Landungsbrücken → Finkenwerder (harbour ferry)
HADAG line 62 — fully step-free boarding from Pier 3
4. Hauptbahnhof → Elbphilharmonie
U4 to Überseequartier + 5 min walk on flat pavement, OR ferry 72 from
Landungsbrücken
Accessibility Tip:
The hvv switch app shows lift outages in real time and reroutes you automatically. The HADAG harbour
ferries are an underrated accessibility win — flat decks, level boarding, and a covered cabin if
the weather turns.
StadtRAD Hamburg — the city's
bike-share
StadtRAD Hamburg has 4.500+ bikes at 280+ stations across the city, run by Deutsche Bahn and fully
integrated into hvv switch.
- Price: First 30 minutes per ride FREE, then €0,10/min, capped at €15,00/day
- Registration: One-off registration fee €5,00 (only first time, valid for life)
- Drop-off: at any official StadtRAD station within the operating zone
- Bike paths in Hamburg are excellent — riding along the Alster lake or the Elbe waterfront is
often faster (and more scenic) than the U-Bahn for short trips
Taxis
Hamburg taxis are metered, cream-coloured, and plentiful. They are reliable and reasonably priced
compared to Munich.
- Flag fall: €4,30 base + €2,80/km (first 4 km), then cheaper per km
- City centre to airport: approximately €25-35 (20-30 min)
- City centre to Reeperbahn: approximately €10-15
- Taxis line up at Hauptbahnhof, Jungfernstieg,
Reeperbahn, and most U-Bahn terminals
🚐 MOIA — Hamburg's electric ride-pooling
- Unique to Hamburg: 100% electric ride-pooling service operating across the
city, born and based in Hamburg
- How it works: book in the MOIA app, share with up to 5 other passengers, fixed
price upfront — usually 20-40% cheaper than a taxi
- Coverage: most of Hamburg incl. Hauptbahnhof, St. Pauli, Altona, HafenCity,
Eimsbüttel, Winterhude. Does NOT serve the airport directly
- Operating hours: ~05:00 to 03:00 daily; very useful as a late-night taxi
alternative
🚗 Other Ride-hailing
- FREE NOW (formerly mytaxi): the dominant taxi-booking app — same metered fare
as a street taxi
- Uber: works in Hamburg with licensed taxi partners; pricing similar to FREE NOW
- Bolt: launched in Hamburg in 2023, often slightly cheaper than the others
E-scooters
- TIER, Lime, Voi: all three operate in Hamburg. Unlock fee €1,00 + €0,20-0,25/min
- No-ride zones: Inside the Mönckebergstraße pedestrian area and along the
Reeperbahn at peak times — scooters will slow to walking pace
- Helmet: not legally required for adults but recommended
Transport Tip:
Hamburg is one of Germany's most cycle-friendly cities — flat, quiet bike lanes along the Alster
and Elbe make StadtRAD genuinely faster than the U-Bahn for short hops. For late-night rides home,
MOIA usually beats taxi pricing.
Roammate Tip
Tip: All-in-one app for
shared transport
In Hamburg, the official hvv switch app combines public transport tickets,
StadtRAD bikes, MOIA ride-pooling, e-scooters and car-sharing in one place. You no longer
need separate accounts for every provider.
Hamburg has excellent 5G coverage from all three German carriers (Telekom, Vodafone, O2). Free WiFi
is available in most U-Bahn stations, all Hochbahn buses, the harbour ferries and many cafés. An
eSIM is the easiest way to stay connected from the moment you land.
Roammate Tip
Best choice for most travellers. Instant activation, excellent
coverage in Hamburg and across Germany. Also covers neighbouring countries with regional
plans.

Hauptbahnhof DB Lockers
Self-service Schließfächer (lockers) are available 24/7 inside Hamburg
Hauptbahnhof. Look for the signs near the Wandelhalle entrance.
- Price: €5,00-7,00 per 24h depending on size (small / medium / large)
- Note: Often full during summer cruise season and DOM funfair weekends —
book Bounce or Stasher in advance for late July, August and Christmas Market season
Roammate Advice:
If you arrive in Hamburg on a cruise day or during the DOM, use Bounce or
Stasher rather than Hauptbahnhof lockers — the station fills up fast and the queues
for the locker hall can take 20+ minutes during peak hours.
