Public Transport in Berlin: Apps, Tickets & Tips 2026

Last updated: 2 March 2026
#4 most visited city in Europe

Berlin operates an extensive public transport network (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses, trams) managed by BVG. Note: Berlin does NOT have automatic daily capping like London – you must manually buy a day pass. Paper tickets must always be validated on the platform, otherwise they are invalid and you risk a €60 fine.

iOS: BVG Fahrinfo | Android: BVG Fahrinfo

Key info at a glance

Main App BVG Fahrinfo (route planner + tickets) or BVG Tickets (tickets only, works with Apple Wallet) Multiple people Yes, you can buy and show multiple tickets in the app. Each ticket has a unique QR code. Check-in/Validation Digital tickets: automatically active upon purchase. Paper tickets: MANDATORY validation in yellow/red machines on the platform. Offline availability No. Tickets must be purchased online. However: purchased tickets remain visible without internet. Payment methods SEPA, credit card (Visa/Mastercard/Amex), PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay Add to Wallet Yes! BVG Tickets app supports Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. Fine for non-validation €60 (both for no ticket and for non-validated paper ticket) Night transport after 01:00 Yes. Metros run non-stop on Fridays/Saturdays. Night buses (N-routes) every 30 minutes. Exit scanning required? No. You do not need to check out on Berlin PT. Ticket activation needed? Digital tickets: no (immediately active). Paper tickets: yes (validation mandatory). Real-time info Yes, the BVG app shows live departure times and lift breakdowns (crucial for wheelchair users).
Main pitfalls

1. ALWAYS validate your paper ticket! Paper tickets must be stamped in the yellow or red validation machine on the platform BEFORE you board. No stamp = invalid = €60 fine, even if you have purchased the ticket. Inspectors do not accept excuses.

2. No automatic daily cap! Unlike London, Berlin does NOT automatically calculate the cheapest daily fare. If you take 4+ rides in a day, you must manually buy a day pass (Tageskarte AB, €11,20). Otherwise you will overpay.

3. Zone ABC for BER airport! The airport is in Zone C. Standard AB tickets do NOT work there. You need an ABC ticket (€5,00 for single trip or €12,90 day pass). This is the most common mistake tourists make.

4. Board at the front after 20:00! Buses require boarding via the front door after 20:00 (safety rule). Rear doors remain closed.

Quick Check before boarding

Which ticket is best for you?

For 2-3 days: Buy day passes!
With 3+ rides per day, the day pass (Tageskarte AB, €11,20) is always cheaper than single tickets. Berlin has no automatic capping, so you must manually buy a day pass to save money.

Ticket options for tourists

Ticket Type Price (2026) Validity When to choose?
Einzelfahrausweis AB (Single) €4,00 120 min, one direction Only 1-2 rides per day
Kurzstrecke (Short trip) €2,80 3 stops metro/6 stops bus, 30 min Short distances in the city center
4-Fahrten-Karte AB €12,40 (€3,10/ride) 4 single rides of 120 min 4-8 rides spread over multiple days
Tageskarte AB (Day pass) €11,20 24 hours unlimited 3+ rides per day (BEST DEAL!)
Tageskarte ABC (Day pass) €12,90 24 hours unlimited incl. airport If you do airport + city on the same day

Calculation example for 3 days in Berlin

Situation: You take 4 PT rides per day (hotel ↔ attractions, 2× round trip).

Scenario Calculation Total Cost Verdict
1. Single tickets only 12 rides × €4,00 €48,00 Too expensive!
2. 4-Fahrten-Karte 3 × 4-trip bundle (€12,40) €37,20 Better, but not optimal
3. Day passes 3 × Day Pass AB (€11,20) €33,60 BEST PRICE!
Conclusion: Day passes are always the cheapest option for tourists with 3+ rides per day. Buy them in the morning in the BVG app.

BER Brandenburg Airport is located 30-45 minutes from the center in Zone C. You ALWAYS need a Zone ABC ticket (AB does NOT work!).

Berlin uses a zone system for ticket prices. For 95% of tourists, Zone AB is sufficient.

What are the zones?

  • Zone A: Inside the S-Bahn ring (city center). All major attractions are located here: The Brandenburg Gate, The Reichstag, Museum Island, Checkpoint Charlie, Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer Platz.
  • Zone B: Outside the ring up to Berlin's city limits.
  • Zone C: Brandenburg (outside Berlin city). Located here: BER Airport, Potsdam, Oranienburg.

Berlin has excellent night transport, especially on weekends! But there are important differences between Friday/Saturday and weekdays.

Weekend (Friday/Saturday night)

Best news: The metro (U-Bahn + S-Bahn) runs NON-STOP all night long!
  • U-Bahn: All lines (U1-U9 except U4) run every 15 minutes
  • S-Bahn Ring (S41/S42): Runs every 10 minutes around the entire ring
  • Times: From Friday 00:00 to Saturday 05:00, and Saturday 00:00 to Sunday 05:00

Weekdays (Sunday-Thursday night)

Metro stops around 00:30-01:00. Then catch the night buses:

  • Recognition: Line number starts with 'N' (e.g. N5, N42, N8)
  • Number of lines: 24 night bus lines
  • Frequency: Every 30 minutes
  • Times: 00:30-4:30 (when the metro is not running)

Important night bus routes:

Line Route Parallel day line
N5 Hauptbahnhof → Alexanderplatz → Eastside ~S5/S7
N42 Zoo → The Brandenburg Gate → Alexanderplatz ~U2
N8 Hermannplatz → Alexanderplatz → Gesundbrunnen ~U8

Night Trams

Trams stop around 00:30. Night buses take over their routes.

Prices

Good news: Standard tickets also work at night! No extra costs.

  • Day Pass valid until 03:00 the following morning
  • Single tickets: simply €4,00 (AB) or €5,00 (ABC)

Safety tips for night transport

  • Weekend: Metro is safer AND faster than night buses. Take the U-Bahn!
  • Night buses: Sit at the front of the bus (near the driver)
  • Safe stations: Hauptbahnhof and Alexanderplatz have night security (staff present)
  • Avoid: Görlitzer Park and Kottbusser Tor at night

Taxi alternative

If public transport is not running or you do not feel safe:

  • Price: €15-25 for center → Mitte/Kreuzberg
  • Apps: Uber works well in Berlin, or local taxis via FreeNow app
  • Safe: Taxis are expensive but safe and reliable
Pro Tip: Weekend in Berlin? Use the 24/7 metro! Weekdays? Check the BVG app for the correct night bus. N42 and N5 are the most used tourist routes.

BER Airport Storage

  • Location: Terminal 1 & 2
  • Price: €6-10 per 24h
  • Suitable for: Longer storage (multiple days possible)
Roammate Advice: For 3-4 hours? Ask your hotel if they can store luggage after check-out (often free). For a whole day: Hauptbahnhof lockers are cheapest, but often full. Bounce is more reliable with more locations across the city and availability always.
