Barcelona boasts an extensive public transport network with metro (12 lines), buses, trams and trains operated by TMB (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona). The system uses a zone structure (Zone 1-6), with the city centre located in Zone 1. Watch out for two key differences from other European cities: Barcelona has NO automatic daily cap like London, so you need to manually purchase a T-Usual (day pass) if you take 4+ rides. Additionally, there is a unique 75-minute transfer window between different modes of transport that counts as 1 ride — but this only works within the same ticket type. The airport (El Prat) is reachable via Metro Line L9 Sud, but you need a special Airport ticket (€5,90) as regular tickets are not valid.
1. No automatic daily cap — buy a day pass manually! Unlike London, Barcelona does NOT automatically calculate the best price. If you take 5+ rides, you'll pay €2,90 each = €14,50, while a T-Usual (day pass) costs just €22,80 for unlimited travel over 30 days. For short trips, the Hola BCN Travel Card (€18,70 for 2 days) is often cheaper. Always calculate what's more affordable: single rides (T-Casual €13 for 10 rides = €1,30/ride) or a day pass.
2. The 75-minute transfer window does NOT work between all tickets! Barcelona has a smart transfer policy: within 75 minutes of your first validation, you can transfer between Metro, TMB bus, Tram, FGC trains and Rodalies (Zone 1) and this counts as 1 ride. BUT: this only works with integrated tickets like T-Casual, T-Usual or Hola BCN. Single tickets (€2,90) have NO transfer rights — you pay again at each transfer. This rule also doesn't apply to Nit Bus (night buses) or private operators.
3. Metro to the airport requires a special ticket! Metro Line L9 Sud to El Prat Airport (stations Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2) falls outside the regular fare system. T-Casual and T-Usual are NOT valid there. You need a special Airport ticket (€5,90 single) or a Hola BCN Travel Card which does cover the airport. Alternative: Aerobús (€7,75) or Bus 46 (T-Casual valid, but slower — 45 min vs. 31 min metro).
4. Pickpockets in the metro and at tourist hotspots! Barcelona is notorious for pickpockets, especially on Metro lines L1/L3 (Plaça Catalunya, Las Ramblas), near The Sagrada Família and on crowded buses. Keep your bag in front of you at all times, use inside pockets with zips, and stay extra alert during transfers. Pickpockets often work in groups and ask "for directions" while another person searches your bags. Use a phone leash — phones are the most stolen item. Avoid using your back pockets!
Recommendation: Hola BCN Travel Card
This is the easiest option for tourists visiting Barcelona for 2-5 days. You get unlimited travel on metro, TMB buses, trams, FGC trains (Zone 1), Rodalies (Zone 1), The Montjuïc Funicular, AND the metro to the airport (Line L9 Sud).
