Six Tube stations around Notting Hill close, restrict entry, or run reduced hours on both carnival days — and Night Tube doesn't run either night. Get this wrong and you're stuck outside a locked gate in a crowd of two million.

What changes during Notting Hill Carnival?
Between 29 August and 1 September, TfL closes or restricts several Underground stations closest to the parade route. Ladbroke Grove is shut all day both days. Notting Hill Gate stops taking entries from 11:00–18:00 and District/Circle line trains skip it entirely. Westbourne Park, Royal Oak and Holland Park also stop entries from 11:00, and Queensway becomes exit-only over the same window. Day and night buses are diverted away from the carnival area, and the A402 at Notting Hill Gate is fully closed to traffic. Step-by-step: getting in and out
- Check TfL's live Carnival travel page the morning you go — tfl.gov.uk/status-updates — closure times can shift.
- Head for Paddington station (Elizabeth line, Bakerloo, Circle, District or Hammersmith & City) and walk in from there — it's the least crowded route and stays open all day.
- If you're coming from the north, Kensal Rise or Kensal Green work, though expect queues by afternoon.
- Tap in and out with contactless or Oyster at every station — no special ticket needed, same fares as any other day.
- Plan your exit before 18:00 if you're near Notting Hill Gate, Royal Oak or Queensway — several stations tighten restrictions or close outright by early evening, and there's no Night Tube to fall back on later.
Panorama, Family Day and Adults' Day
The event actually runs three days. Saturday 29 August is the UK National Panorama Steel Band Competition at Emslie Horniman's Pleasance — smaller crowds, no parade-route closures yet. Sunday 30 August is Family Day: J'Ouvert runs 06:00–09:00 for early risers, then the Children's Day Parade from 10:00–18:00 — noticeably calmer than Monday. Monday 31 August is Adults' Day, the main parade from 10:30 with static sound systems running 12:00–19:00 — this is the busiest day and when station restrictions bite hardest. If you only want the atmosphere without the peak crowds, Sunday afternoon is the easier day to travel.
Common mistakes
Mistake: Heading straight for Notting Hill Gate assuming it's the main entrance. Fix: It's entry-restricted from 11:00 and District/Circle trains don't stop there at all. Use Paddington instead.
Mistake: Assuming Night Tube will get you home if you stay into the evening. Fix: Night Tube and Night Overground don't run on either carnival night. Plan a night bus, cab, or leave before the regular Underground closes.
Mistake: Trying to walk back into a station you exited earlier near the parade route. Fix: Several stations are exit-only from 11:00 — once you're out, you can't tap back in there. Walk to Paddington or Bayswater instead.
